Details

Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. The Anthropic Institute is an externally-facing function whose job is to benefit the public by producing and releasing information about how Anthropic’s AI systems affect the company, the broader economy, the threat landscape, and the people and organizations that interact with our systems.

The Institute focuses on four societally relevant challenge areas:

  • How our AI systems change jobs and the economy at large
  • How AI systems' expressed personality, values, and normative behaviors affect users and organizations
  • How “closing the loop” on AI development changes the relationship between humans and machines and speeds AI evolution
  • How AI alters defensive and offensive capabilities with implications for national security and global balance of power

You will spend your time researching how Anthropic is tackling these challenges, synthesizing findings from across the organization, and producing rigorous analysis for internal decision-making and public audiences. You will use Claude aggressively, creatively, and daily to surface insights and will partner with teams across Anthropic to surface and communicate their work.

Responsibilities

  • Research how Anthropic teams are addressing the Institute’s challenge areas and synthesize findings into coherent analysis
  • Talk with colleagues across Anthropic to build a picture of different teams' approaches
  • Produce written analysis and memos for internal leadership and public audiences
  • Partner with teams to develop and publish public outputs
  • Convene internal and external experts to generate policy options and other outputs
  • Design and execute creative public-facing work, including technical demonstrations (examples in the posting: Golden Gate Claude, Project Vend, Robodog)
  • Conduct independent research using Anthropic’s AI systems and organizational knowledge

Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience in technical policy research, think tank work, or applied research in domains relevant to the Institute’s focus areas (AI, labor economics, national security, or emerging technology governance)
  • Track record of publishing or producing public-facing work (policy memos, research reports, white papers, public analysis)
  • Comfort operating at the intersection of technical and policy audiences: able to read technical work, ask informed questions, and translate findings accurately without losing nuance
  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize across disciplines (economics, political science, technology, organizational behavior)
  • Deep experience using Claude as a research and organizational knowledge-gathering tool
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience

Compensation

  • Annual salary range: $295,000 - $345,000 USD

Logistics

  • Location: San Francisco, CA
  • Location-based hybrid policy: staff are expected to be in one of Anthropic’s offices at least 25% of the time
  • Visa sponsorship: Anthropic states they do sponsor visas and retain an immigration lawyer to assist, although sponsorship is not guaranteed for every role/candidate
  • Education: At least a Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required

How we work / Culture

  • Anthropic emphasizes large-scale, collaborative research and values communication skills
  • The team publishes research in areas such as interpretability, scaling laws, multimodal neurons, AI & compute, and learning from human preferences

Application notes

  • Anthropic notes security guidance about recruiter communications and provides candidate AI usage guidance links
