Details

The Anthropic Fellows Program provides funding and mentorship to promising technical talent to work on empirical AI research projects with the goal of producing a public output (for example, a paper submission). This posting is specific to the ML Systems & Performance workstream. The next cohort starts July 20, 2026; apply by April 26, 2026. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis and exceptional flexibility on start dates may be possible.

What to expect

  • 4 months of full-time research (with possible extension)
  • Direct mentorship from Anthropic researchers
  • Access to a shared workspace (London or Berkeley)
  • Connection to the broader AI safety and security research community
  • Weekly stipend: 3,850 USD / 2,310 GBP / 4,300 CAD
  • Funding for compute (~$15k/month) and other research expenses
  • Expectation of 40 hours per week for the program

Interview process

  • Initial application & reference check
  • Technical assessments & interviews
  • Research discussion

ML Systems & Performance — Mentors, research areas, & example projects

Potential mentors include Alwin Peng and Zygi Straznickas. Example projects and areas include:

  • Building a CPU simulator for accelerator workloads
  • Adding backends for different accelerators on an open source project
  • Building on-demand infrastructure for infrastructure-heavy fellows projects
  • Building complex synthetic data or environment pipelines

A past example of an engineering-heavy project is referenced in the posting (AI agents finding blockchain smart contract exploits).

Requirements

  • Fluent in Python programming
  • Available to work full-time on the Fellows program
  • Strong technical background in computer science, mathematics, or physics (or equivalent experience)
  • Experience or strong interest in building complex ML systems, balancing research exploration with engineering rigor and operational reliability
  • Comfortable working with large-scale distributed systems and high-performance computing
  • Experience with training, fine-tuning, or evaluating large language models; adept at analyzing and debugging model training processes

Strong candidates may also have backgrounds relevant to other Fellows workstreams (economics, social sciences, cybersecurity) or related research/engineering experience.

Logistics

  • Fellowship runs for 4 months, full-time. If you cannot commit to the full duration, you may still apply and note constraints.
  • Workspace locations: London and Berkeley (mentors may visit)
  • Remote fellows are accepted in the UK, US, or Canada; applicants must be located in and have work authorization for the US, UK, or Canada during the program
  • Visa sponsorship: Anthropic is not able to sponsor visas for fellows for this program
  • The program does not guarantee full-time offers, though strong performance may lead to offers or other opportunities

Compensation

  • Expected base stipend: 3,850 USD / 2,310 GBP / 4,300 CAD per week
  • Expectation of 40 hours/week
  • Funding for compute (~$15k/month) and other research expenses

How to apply

  • Apply via the Constellation application form (link in the posting). Applications and interviews are managed by Constellation, Anthropic's recruiting partner for this program.
  • The posting encourages applicants to apply even if they do not meet every single qualification.
