Details
Automattic is hiring exceptional AI engineers to build and ship AI-driven product features used by millions. You will work across Automattic’s ecosystem (WordPress.com, WooCommerce, Tumblr, Beeper, Clay, Jetpack, Pocket Casts, etc.), embedding with product teams or scaling prototypes to production. This role is remote-global with an option to work in-person in New York City.
Responsibilities
- Ship user-facing AI features across Automattic’s product ecosystem, from site-building tools to ecommerce recommendations to messaging experiences.
- Build and iterate rapidly on AI-powered products that directly impact millions of users.
- Collaborate with product managers, designers, and engineers (in-person in NYC or distributed globally).
- Experiment and scale successful AI innovations from prototype to production across multiple products.
- Embed with teams across WordPress.com, WooCommerce, Jetpack, Clay, Beeper, Pocket Casts, and other products.
- Stay current with AI/ML developments that unlock new user experiences.
Requirements / Technical Experience
- Production experience with LLMs (APIs or custom implementations) at meaningful scale.
- Strong full-stack development experience; Automattic primarily uses PHP, TypeScript, and React.
- Experience building AI-powered user interfaces that perform well at scale.
- Solid machine learning fundamentals and the ability to keep up with rapid developments in the field.
- Production-first mindset: experience shipping AI features used by real users is valued over purely theoretical knowledge.
- Track record of technical leadership or influence on high-performing teams.
- Ability to work effectively in distributed teams; collaborative in-person work in NYC when applicable.
Bonus Points
- Developed consumer AI products that scaled to significant numbers of users.
- Experience with WordPress, ecommerce, or messaging platforms.
- Open source contributions that demonstrate your thinking.
- Previous startup experience as a founder or early engineer.
- Based in NYC or willing to relocate (strong preference, but not required).
Compensation and Benefits
- Salary range: $70,000 to $170,000 USD (range is global and pay is issued in local currency).
