xAI’s mission is to create AI systems that can accurately understand the universe and aid humanity in its pursuit of knowledge. The team is small, highly motivated, and focused on engineering excellence. This role is for an AI Tutor — Chemical Engineering specialist who will provide high-quality input and labels using proprietary software, collaborate with technical staff to train new AI tasks, refine annotation tools, and select complex problems to improve model performance. The role requires adaptability, strong communication, and the ability to interpret and execute evolving instructions.

Responsibilities

  • Use proprietary software applications to provide input/labels on defined projects.
  • Support and ensure the delivery of high-quality curated data.
  • Contribute to the training of new tasks, working closely with technical staff to develop and implement initiatives/technologies.
  • Interact with technical staff to help improve the design of efficient annotation tools.
  • Interpret, analyze, and execute tasks based on given instructions.

Requirements

  • Master's or PhD in Chemical Engineering, or a highly-related field (required).
  • Proficiency in reading and writing, both informal and professional, in English.
  • Strong ability to navigate information resources, databases, and online resources.
  • Outstanding communication, interpersonal, analytical, and organizational capabilities.
  • Solid reading comprehension and capacity to exercise autonomous judgment with limited data/material.
  • Strong passion for and commitment to technological advancements and innovation.
  • For personal-device users: must have a Chromebook, Mac with macOS 11.0 or later, or Windows 10 or later.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in Chemical Engineering.
  • Substantial professional experience working on real-world problems in chemical engineering.
  • At least one publication in a reputable journal or outlet.
  • Previous AI Tutoring experience.
  • Teaching experience (professor, teacher, or tutor).
  • Experience in technical writing, journalism, or a professional writing setting.
  • Professional background as a chemical engineer.

Location & Other Expectations

  • Tutor roles may be full-time, part-time, or contractor positions depending on needs and fit.
  • Contractor hours vary widely by project scope and availability; on average most projects may involve at least 10 hours per week, but this is not a fixed commitment.
  • Tutor roles may be performed remotely from any location worldwide, subject to legal eligibility, time-zone compatibility, and role-specific needs.
  • For US-based candidates, xAI cannot hire residents of Wyoming or Illinois at this time.

Compensation

  • US based candidates: $45/hour - $100/hour depending on experience, skills, education, geographic location, and qualifications.
  • International candidates: information provided during recruitment.
