Details
xAI’s mission is to create AI systems that can accurately understand the universe and aid humanity in its pursuit of knowledge. The team is small, highly motivated, and focused on engineering excellence. This role (AI Tutor - Chemistry Specialist) contributes to those efforts by providing high-quality labeled inputs and by working closely with technical staff to support training of new AI tasks. The position involves selecting challenging problems from advanced chemical sciences, providing data in text/voice/video formats (including annotations, audio recordings, and video sessions), and helping improve annotation tools and model performance. This is a remote position that can be full-time, part-time, or contractor-based.
Responsibilities
- Use proprietary software applications to provide input/labels on defined projects.
- Support and ensure the delivery of high-quality curated data.
- Contribute to the training of new tasks by working closely with technical staff on development and implementation of AI initiatives.
- Collaborate with technical staff to enhance the design and efficiency of annotation tools.
- Select and solve complex problems across fields of chemistry to guide AI models and improve outcomes in scientific discovery and application.
- Provide detailed solutions and evaluate model responses in your areas of chemistry expertise (organic, physical, analytical, inorganic, computational, polymer, nuclear, medicinal chemistry, etc.).
- Regularly interpret, analyze, and execute tasks based on evolving instructions.
Requirements
- Master’s or PhD in a chemistry-related field.
- Expertise in chemistry-related subdomains such as Organic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Organometallic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Nuclear Chemistry, Computational/Theoretical Chemistry, Polymer/Materials Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Catalysis, Surface/Colloid Chemistry, or Drug Discovery.
- Proficiency in reading and writing, both informal and professional, in English.
- Strong ability to navigate information resources, databases, and online resources.
- Outstanding communication, interpersonal, analytical, and organizational capabilities.
- Solid reading comprehension and ability to exercise autonomous judgment with limited data.
- Strong passion for technological advancement and innovation.
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Multiple publications in reputable peer-reviewed journals, with at least one first-author paper.
- Previous AI tutoring experience.
- Teaching experience (professor, teacher, or tutor).
- Experience in technical writing, journalism, or a professional writing setting.
Location and Other Expectations
- Tutor roles may be offered as full-time, part-time, or contractor positions depending on needs and candidate fit.
- Contractor hours vary widely; on average many projects may involve at least 10 hours per week, but this is not a fixed commitment and depends on scope.
- Roles may be performed remotely from any location worldwide, subject to legal eligibility, time-zone compatibility, and role-specific needs.
- For US-based candidates, xAI cannot hire in Wyoming or Illinois.
- xAI is unable to provide visa sponsorship for this role.
- For those working from a personal device, supported platforms are Chromebook, Mac with macOS 11.0 or later, or Windows 10 or later.
Compensation and Benefits
- US-based candidates: $45/hour to $75/hour depending on experience, skills, education, geographic location, and qualifications.
- International candidate compensation details will be provided during recruitment.
- Benefits vary by employment type, location, and jurisdiction. Eligible U.S. positions may include health insurance, 401(k), and paid sick leave; specifics provided during interviews.
