Details

Bloomberg is a data company. Delivering timely insights to our clients requires extensive specialized databases and data augmentation pipelines, fusing data from a variety of structured and unstructured data stores. Curating quality insights requires collecting data from sources built on a variety of open source and home-grown solutions, from streaming real-time market data to long-term data storage.

In this role within the CTO Infrastructure team, you will develop the vision for Bloomberg’s managed data services, supporting the next evolution of structured and unstructured data storage. You will define unified products and capabilities, and partner tightly with engineering teams to develop the architecture and deliver these products, directly serving business needs. You will bring your technical expertise to help bridge business needs and technology delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Develop the vision for Bloomberg's managed data services and define unified products and capabilities.
  • Partner with engineering teams to develop architectures and deliver products that meet business needs.
  • Define standards, policies, maturity levels and guidelines to ensure consistency across services.
  • Focus on API-driven self-service enablement and management.
  • Synthesize user requirements and user journeys for a variety of users (developers, data engineers, data scientists, etc.).
  • Translate technical features into business value and communicate with engineering, operations, legal, security teams and executive stakeholders.
  • Evolve enterprise data maturity model through data classification, data governance frameworks, and data catalog technologies.
  • Integrate reliability, robustness, resilience, security and scalability into roadmaps and make trade-offs between technical debt and new features.

Requirements

You’ll need to have:

  • 10+ years of experience working on databases or unstructured data storage technologies as a developer.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • A bachelor’s degree in systems engineering, electrical engineering or computer science, or equivalent.
  • A strong understanding of relational (SQL) and non-relational (NoSQL) databases from operational, scale, and design perspectives.
  • Ability to define and evaluate architectures for scalable, resilient, durable and high-performance data stores, including geographically distributed on-premises and public cloud implementations.
  • Working knowledge of caching technologies, data access APIs, query languages, and data integration patterns.
  • Ability to work with or define SDKs or connectors for integration.
  • Familiarity with unstructured data storage technologies (such as Ceph with RADOS).
  • Knowledge of security and compliance controls, including encryption at rest/in transit, access controls, integration into data governance regimes, and compliance standards.
  • Experience integrating security controls across diverse data storage technologies including secure-by-default configurations, Enterprise IAM (authentication & authorization), and encryption strategies in-transit (TLS) and at-rest (storage-level, TDE, and application/client-side methods).

Developer Experience Focus:

  • User-centric approach; ability to synthesize user requirements and journeys for a wide variety of users.
  • Define standards/policies, maturity levels and other guidelines to ensure consistency.
  • Focus on API-driven self-service enablement and management.

Product Management:

  • Ability to develop, refine and communicate a compelling product vision and roadmap based on customer and stakeholder input, aligning with customer needs, business goals and engineering capabilities.
  • Strong ability to translate technical features into business value; interface with engineering, operations, legal, security teams as well as executive stakeholders.
  • Able to communicate with empathy to understand pain points for users.
  • An understanding of the use of KPI frameworks (OKRs, success metrics) to drive product outcomes. DORA.
  • Ability to collaborate with others to evolve the enterprise data maturity model through data classification, data governance frameworks, and data catalog technologies.
  • Good insight into integrating reliability, robustness, resilience, security and scalability into a roadmap, alongside customer features and capabilities.

We’d like to see:

  • 2+ years of experience as an infrastructure technical product manager or similar role focused on product development and “go to market” strategies.
  • A strong philosophy of creating reusable, reliable and robust shared services.
  • Experience with automation technologies (e.g. Ansible, Chef, Salt) for managing infrastructure at scale, as well as resource management technologies (e.g. Kubernetes, OpenStack).
  • Industry/community involvement in databases and data storage (open source contribution, standards development, academic journals, conference presentations, or equivalent).
  • Understanding of observability tools for performance monitoring for a variety of user personas.
  • AI-related database technologies & tools, including but not limited to Vector DBs for RAG, indexing methods, inference, etc.
  • Data lifecycle management techniques and technologies.
