We are seeking an experienced and skilled Database Engineer to join Collibra’s Product & Database Reliability Team. You will be responsible for ensuring the optimal performance, scalability, and reliability of our database systems, collaborating with cross-functional teams, providing technical leadership, and implementing best practices to enhance the efficiency of our database infrastructure.

This is a hybrid role based in our New York office. Our hybrid model requires working from the office at least two days each week.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze and optimize database performance through monitoring, tuning, and query optimization to ensure optimal response times and efficient resource utilization.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to brainstorm and assist with resolution of database-related issues.
  • Conduct capacity planning and forecasting to anticipate future database requirements and ensure scalability; automate sizing and scalability processes.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex database issues, including performance bottlenecks, scalability problems, and data inconsistencies.
  • Analyze observability data to identify patterns, trends, and potential performance bottlenecks.
  • Work closely with developers, system administrators, and stakeholders to understand application requirements and provide guidance on database-related concerns.
  • Implement automation for repetitive tasks and performance monitoring to streamline processes and enhance efficiency; develop and maintain automated solutions for continuous workload analysis at scale.
  • Define and document best practices for database architecture, configurations, processes, and troubleshooting procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent related working experience (advanced degree preferred).
  • Proven experience as a Database Performance Engineer or similar role with at least 3–5 years of hands-on experience.
  • Expertise in PostgreSQL and proficiency in SQL.
  • Basic knowledge of GraphDB, Kubernetes, and Linux is a plus.
  • Professional experience with cloud hosting platforms such as AWS and GCP; preference for candidates with managed database experience.
  • Knowledge of database architecture, replication, and optimization techniques.
  • Familiarity with performance monitoring and tuning tools, automation, capacity planning, and observability.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; effective troubleshooting of complex database issues.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills; ability to work closely with developers and system administrators.
  • This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.
  • Because this role supports the US government, the candidate must be a US citizen who resides on US soil.

Measures of success

Within your first month:

  • Familiarize yourself with the existing database infrastructure and its components.
  • Engage with cross-functional teams and gain insights into ongoing projects and challenges.
  • Initiate communication and collaboration with developers, system administrators, and stakeholders.

Within your third month:

  • Contribute to performance optimization efforts, implementing monitoring, tuning, and query optimization strategies.
  • Participate in capacity planning and forecasting exercises.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in using automation tools to streamline tasks and improve efficiency.

Within your sixth month:

  • Contribute significantly to database configurations, best practices, and troubleshooting procedures.
  • Collaborate on developing and maintaining automated solutions for workload analysis at scale.

Compensation

  • Standard base salary range: $128,000 - $160,000 per year.
  • Position is not eligible for additional commission-based compensation. Salary offers are based on experience, skills, and location.
