Details

Airbnb's Marketplaces Data and AI organization builds the machine learning, data engineering, and analytics systems that power how guests find places to stay and how hosts succeed on the platform. The Core Entities program is the company's canonical semantic model for objects like hosts, listings, users, and trips, and the events in their lifecycles. This work feeds the intelligence layer that Airbnb's next generation of AI products depends on.

Responsibilities

  • Own two connected areas: Entity Data Foundation and Trip Intelligence.
    • Entity Data Foundation: partner with data-producing teams to onboard entities to the shared semantic model; drive the attribute serving platform delivering 1,700+ quality and behavioral signals at production scale; maintain health and governance contracts that give consumers confidence in the data.
    • Trip Intelligence: define and build a holistic, near-real-time Trip data product and schema; reconcile representations across reservations, messaging, customer support, and trust systems; drive the real-time trip intelligence layer aggregating signals across the trip lifecycle for proactive support and AI products.
  • Drive entity onboarding with producer teams — unblock data quality issues, resolve schema ambiguity, and close gaps between platform promises and producer experience.
  • Lead technical design on the trip entity: data model, lifecycle event taxonomy, real-time streaming architecture, and privacy-safe handling of message and conversation data.
  • Partner with compute and data infrastructure teams to advance realtime data processing capabilities.
  • Partner with proactive trip support, customer support triage, and host AI product teams to validate that the signal layer meets use cases.
  • Review designs spanning attribute serving, real-time event pipelines, and cross-system entity mapping.
  • Work with principal engineer and program manager on roadmap sequencing and escalation of infrastructure dependencies.
  • Manage and develop a team of ~7 engineers — own career development and team growth.
  • Represent entity platform work in executive-level program reviews.

Requirements

  • 9+ years of industry experience, including 3–5+ years in engineering management.
  • Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Computer Science, Data Engineering, or a related field.
  • Background in data engineering, platform engineering, or data infrastructure; understanding of entity modeling, schema evolution, and data contracts.
  • Hands-on fluency with distributed data systems: batch and streaming pipelines, online and offline serving, and event-driven architectures sufficient to drive design reviews and assess tradeoffs.
  • Experience in cross-functional platform roles: navigating the tension between producers and consumers without direct authority.
  • Experience with greenfield work — building systems from a blank schema or early-stage spec.
  • Strong instincts about what belongs in shared infrastructure vs. product teams.
  • Clear communicator capable of representing technical decisions to senior leadership and keeping stakeholders aligned.
  • Commitment to engineering excellence, diversity, and belonging.

Location

  • US — Remote eligible. Role may include occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites. Candidates must live in a U.S. state where Airbnb, Inc. has a registered entity (some states may be excluded).

Compensation

  • Base pay range: $212,000 — $265,000 USD.
  • This role may also be eligible for bonus, equity, benefits, and Employee Travel Credits.
