Details
Reddit is a community of communities built on shared interests, passion, and trust. Video consumption on the platform is experiencing massive organic growth and Reddit is investing in integrating media as a functional layer of discussion. This role will lead the Media Foundations & Delivery team to transition media into a first-class citizen with a strong technical foundation and extensible architecture. The role is remote within the United States and leads a cross-functional group of Backend, iOS, Android, and Web engineers.
Responsibilities
- Drive infrastructure modernization to elevate media to a first-class citizen.
- Optimize playback and delivery; own QoS-related success metrics including Time to First Frame (TTFF), stall/rebuffer rates, and exits before video screen (EBVS).
- Manage global distribution in partnership with infrastructure teams to scale media via CDNs, edge computing, and caching strategies.
- Standardize formats and streaming protocols (HLS, MPEG-DASH) and container formats (CMAF, MP4).
- Balance immediate performance fixes (e.g., MP4 playback optimizations) with long-term architectural work (media delivery at the edge, caching strategies).
- Establish technical vision and direction for media systems and define Service Level Objectives and Indicators (SLOs/SLIs) to guide investment decisions.
- Champion a culture of innovation and experimentation while balancing platform scale with product velocity.
- Work closely with Product, Data, and ML teams to ensure alignment and impact.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or a related quantitative field.
- 8+ years of industry experience, including 3+ years of engineering management experience, specifically leading complex, high-volume consumer systems.
- Experience managing cross-platform teams (Backend and Mobile/Client) is highly preferred.
- Proficiency in at least one programming language: Java, Go, or Python.
- Strong background in video streaming technologies, CDN routing, and media ingestion; understanding of multi-part uploads, encoding schedulers, and adaptive bitrate streaming.
- Familiarity with streaming protocols (HLS, MPEG-DASH), container formats (CMAF, MP4), and related playback optimizations.
- Experience defining and governing SLOs/SLIs.
- Proven ability to implement experimental ideas to drive growth.
- Exceptional leadership, team management, communication, and collaboration skills.
- Experience with media creation experiences such as video or image editing tools, composers, or creator UIs.

Pay Transparency
- Base salary range (US): $217,000 - $303,000 USD.
- Role may be eligible for equity in the form of restricted stock units and, depending on the position offered, may also be eligible to receive a commission.
