Details

Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. The Passport team is building a centralized identity, verification, and trust-grant platform that will touch Claude.ai, first-party APIs, and third-party platforms. This role will expand the early team, define architecture, and ship the initial platform that supports identity verification flows, a centralized trust graph, integration with Safeguards, and a user-facing portal.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and grow the Passport engineering team: hire early team members, set technical direction, and define team operations
  • Own engineering execution end-to-end: planning, prioritization, delivery quality, team health, and incident response for a critical system used by all Claude products
  • Partner with safeguards, product, and design to shape the roadmap and make integration between automated decisions and human review work end-to-end
  • Work directly with customers and go-to-market teams on verification and trust requirements; translate customer needs into engineering priorities
  • Drive compliance and platform-readiness work by partnering with security, legal, and the broader platform organization
  • Coordinate across product teams that depend on Passport, ensuring migrations and integrations land cleanly
  • Recruit, onboard, and grow engineers; provide feedback and build a healthy, high-performing team

Requirements

  • Experience taking a product or platform from 0→1, making early architectural calls and shipping initial versions
  • Strong engineering management skills with emphasis on clear feedback, effective 1:1s, and consistent investment in team growth
  • Experience leading teams that build systems other teams depend on and understanding the discipline required for systems on other teams' critical paths
  • Comfortable working with customers and collaborating with sales, customer success, and safeguards partners
  • Minimum education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience
  • Minimum years of experience: will correlate with internal job level requirements for the position

Strong candidates may also have:

  • Experience building customer verification or identity systems and working with third-party verification providers
  • Background designing centralized policy or trust systems with decisions propagated across downstream surfaces
  • Experience building trust & safety tooling, including platform-side integration of human review into automated decisioning
  • Experience with multi-tenant platforms consumed by first-party apps, direct API customers, and third parties
  • Background owning compliance and regulatory work within an engineering organization
  • Experience building user-facing portals for account verification, trust, or compliance flows

Logistics

  • Locations: San Francisco, CA and Seattle, WA (location-based hybrid policy: staff expected to be in an office at least 25% of the time)
  • Visa sponsorship: Anthropic states they do sponsor visas and retain an immigration lawyer to assist, though sponsorship is not guaranteed for every role/candidate
  • Applicants are encouraged to apply even if they do not meet every qualification

Compensation & Benefits

  • Annual Salary: $405,000 - $485,000 USD
  • Anthropic states it offers competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and an office space for collaboration.
