Engineering Manager, Platform Foundations

This role sits in the Platform org and leads and grows teams of software engineers working on the foundational building blocks that Anthropic’s product organization runs on. The org owns product infrastructure at large scale: compute, networking, systems serving APIs and apps, and developer productivity tooling. The manager will run a multi-team organization (through other managers and tech leads), set technical strategy and multi-year roadmap, scale infrastructure across AWS, Azure, and GCP, and raise development velocity across the product engineering org.

Responsibilities

• Lead a multi-team engineering organization through other managers and tech leads: hiring, developing leaders, and creating a culture that retains strong engineers
• Set technical strategy and multi-year roadmap for product infrastructure including compute, networking, API/app-serving systems, and developer productivity tooling
• Define direction, sequence work, and de-risk large initiatives spanning multiple teams
• Scale infrastructure to meet rapidly growing customer demand while maintaining high reliability and cost efficiency
• Operate the stack across AWS, Azure, and GCP, including complex multi-region and international deployments
• Remove bottlenecks to increase development velocity without sacrificing quality
• Partner with product, research, and infrastructure leaders and make architectural decisions serving the organization
• Manage senior stakeholders and keep executives and partner teams aligned
• Grow engineering leadership by developing managers and senior ICs

Requirements

• 10+ years of engineering experience with a deep track record of engineering leadership (8+ years), including running multi-team organizations and managing managers at scale
• Experience building and operating product infrastructure at very high scale with stringent reliability and efficiency requirements
• Experience leading complex multi-region or international infrastructure deployments
• Experience leading organizations through major growth or transition (e.g., scaling systems and teams from early-stage to enterprise-grade)
• Experience in both startup and enterprise-scale environments is valuable
• Strong track record recruiting, scaling, and retaining engineering talent and developing managers and senior ICs
• Strong stakeholder management and clear communication across functions and executives
• Strong technical background to set architectural direction across a broad infrastructure surface
• Commitment to Anthropic's mission and responsible AI development

Preferred / Strong candidates may also have

• Experience deploying and operating production infrastructure multi-cloud (AWS, Azure, GCP)
• Experience with developer productivity and developer experience at scale: tooling, CI/CD, and workflows
• Cloud-native architecture experience, containerization (e.g., Kubernetes), and large-scale capacity management
• Experience operating infrastructure in regulated environments or under data-residency and sovereignty requirements
• Experience building or operating infrastructure that serves AI and LLM products

Logistics

• Minimum education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education/training/experience
• Location: San Francisco, CA; location-based hybrid policy: staff are expected to be in an office at least 25% of the time
• Visa sponsorship: Anthropic states they do sponsor visas and will make reasonable efforts to secure a visa if an offer is made
• Annual salary range: $485,000 - $625,000 USD
