Details

Grafana Labs is a remote-first, open-source powerhouse with more than 20M users of Grafana globally. The company builds the Grafana Cloud and Grafana Enterprise Stack (metrics with Grafana Mimir, logs with Grafana Loki, traces with Grafana Tempo) and helps thousands of companies manage observability.

This is a remote position. We are considering candidates in Germany, Sweden, Spain, Ireland and the United Kingdom only.

The Opportunity

Application Core Services (AppCore) is a group within Platform (Foundations). Foundations produces the Internal Engineering Platform (IEP) and partners closely with Cloud, Enterprise, and Grafana teams. AppCore develops essential systems that drive Grafana's business operations, including the billing engine responsible for customer usage calculation, provisioning automation after contract signature, cloud marketplace integrations (AWS, Azure, GCP), and the customer account management portal.

You will lead the Usage squad focused on billing, cost management, reconciliation systems, and related domain areas that directly impact customers and internal stakeholders. The role emphasizes reliability, developer experience, complex workflow and systems problem solving, and cross-functional collaboration.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and grow a distributed engineering team: regular 1:1s, feedback, performance and career development.
  • Partner with product management and engineering leadership to shape the Usage squad roadmap, strategy, and OKRs.
  • Guide the team through full project lifecycle: technical design, scoping, delivery, and post-launch iteration for Usage domain systems (billing engine, cost management, reconciliation).
  • Act as a project manager to coordinate with Product, DealOps, GTM, Pricing and Monetization, Support, and adjacent AppCore squads to remove blockers and ensure cross-service delivery.
  • Foster a high-trust, security-first team culture and embrace thoughtful AI-assisted development practices to reduce toil and improve workflows.
  • Contribute to hiring and talent acquisition, partnering with People Ops to attract and retain diverse engineering talent.

Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years of experience managing software engineering teams.
  • At least 3 years of prior experience as an Individual Contributor (IC) in a related engineering role.
  • Strong software engineering background, ideally including backend systems (e.g., Go) to credibly engage in technical design discussions.
  • Solid understanding of distributed systems principles: scalability, fault tolerance, consistency, and observability.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage delivery across multiple concurrent projects, align competing stakeholders, and communicate risks and timelines.
  • Comfortable working with autonomous engineering teams and collaborating asynchronously across time zones and cultures.
  • Deep customer-focus: ground technical decisions in user and business impact.
  • Comfortable and curious about integrating AI-assisted tooling into team workflows.

Bonus Points For

  • Experience with high-volume billing systems, usage metering, and customer-facing cost management applications.
  • Practical experience implementing and automating complex pricing logic, promotions, discounts, rebilling, and usage forgiveness with strong auditability.
  • Familiarity with cloud marketplace integrations (AWS, Azure, GCP) and compliance/refactoring for IT General Controls or RBAC.
  • Experience with SaaS provisioning, tenancy, regional expansion, plugin rollout, or customer lifecycle systems.
  • Experience with Kubernetes control-plane patterns, operators, reconcilers, or desired-state systems.
  • Familiarity with observability tooling (Grafana, Prometheus, OpenTelemetry).
  • Experience contributing to or maintaining open source projects.

Compensation & Rewards

In the United Kingdom, the base compensation range for this role is GBP 103,000 - GBP 129,000. Actual compensation may vary based on level, experience, and skillset. All roles include Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). Compensation ranges are country-specific; recruiters will discuss the defined pay range for other locations during the process.
