Automattic is hiring experienced engineers worldwide to help build and maintain WordPress.com, WooCommerce, Gutenberg, Tumblr and other products. The company is fully distributed and open-source friendly, ships frequently with continuous integration and peer code review, and values high-quality engineering, debugging skills, and experience working at scale.
Responsibilities
- Contribute to Automattic's product ecosystem (WordPress.com, WooCommerce, Gutenberg, Tumblr, etc.) and help shape product development.
- Work with AI-powered features and tooling where applicable.
- Collaborate with distributed teams, participate in peer code review, and ship changes frequently using continuous integration and deployment practices.
- Diagnose and debug production issues; focus on maintainability, performance, and scale.
- Engage with open-source projects and contribute where appropriate.
- Travel 3–4 weeks per year to meet teammates in person.
Requirements
- Production experience with several programming languages, frameworks, and paradigms.
- Comfortable working with or becoming an expert in PHP and JavaScript (Automattic primarily uses these languages).
- Experience working at scale — backend, performance, or in environments with large, diverse user bases.
- Strong debugging skills and attention to detail.
- Comfortable working in an open-source, fully remote, distributed environment.
- Willingness and ability to travel ~3–4 weeks per year for team meetups.
Compensation
- Salary range: $70,000 - $170,000 USD (global ranges; paid in local currency). The company states pay reflects potential contribution and impact and may in some cases go beyond the stated range.
