Role overview

As an AI Tutor - Mechanical Engineering specialist, you will provide high-quality input and labels using proprietary software to support training of new AI tasks. You will collaborate closely with technical staff to improve annotation tools, curate high-quality data, select complex problems where your expertise can improve model performance, and interpret and execute evolving instructions in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Use proprietary software applications to provide input/labels on defined projects.
  • Support and ensure the delivery of high-quality curated data.
  • Contribute to the training of new tasks and work closely with technical staff on development and implementation of initiatives/technologies.
  • Interact with technical staff to help improve the design of efficient annotation tools.
  • Interpret, analyze, and execute tasks based on given instructions.

Requirements

Basic qualifications

  • Master’s or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a highly-related field.
  • Proficiency in reading and writing informal and professional English.
  • Strong ability to navigate information resources, databases, and online resources.
  • Outstanding communication, interpersonal, analytical, and organizational capabilities.
  • Solid reading comprehension and capacity to exercise autonomous judgment with limited data/material.
  • Strong passion for and commitment to technological advancements and innovation.

Preferred skills and experience

  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Substantial professional experience solving real-world mechanical engineering problems.
  • At least one publication in a reputable journal or outlet.
  • Previous AI Tutoring experience.
  • Teaching experience (professor, teacher, or tutor).
  • Experience in technical writing, journalism, or a professional writing setting.
  • Professional background as a mechanical engineer.

Location and other expectations

  • Tutor roles may be full-time, part-time, or contractor positions depending on role needs and candidate fit.
  • Contractor hours vary by project scope and availability; on average many projects may involve at least 10 hours per week to achieve deliverables, but this is not a fixed commitment.
  • Roles may be performed remotely from any location worldwide, subject to legal eligibility, time-zone compatibility, and role-specific needs. (For US-based candidates, xAI is unable to hire in the states of Wyoming and Illinois.)
  • xAI is unable to provide visa sponsorship.
  • For those working from a personal device, acceptable computers include a Chromebook, a Mac with macOS 11.0 or later, or Windows 10 or later.

Compensation and benefits

  • US-based candidates: $45/hour - $75/hour depending on experience, skills, education, geographic location, and qualifications. International candidate compensation information will be provided during recruitment.
  • Benefits vary by employment type, location, and jurisdiction. For eligible U.S. positions, benefits may include health insurance, 401(k), and paid sick leave. Specific details provided during the interview process.
