Eneco is accelerating the energy transition and needs resilient, high-quality data systems to support long-term forecasting, asset planning, and near‑real‑time trading. As a Principal Full-Stack Data Engineer you will modernize and stabilize mission-critical data and ML platforms used across the energy balancing chain, improving data quality and lineage, and setting technical standards across teams. This is a hands-on technical leadership role: you will design, build, review, decide and guide, working closely with Engineering Managers, Staff Engineers and Product Managers.
Responsibilities
- Lead and shape mission-critical data and ML platforms that power Eneco’s energy balancing chain (long-term forecasting to real-time trading).
- Drive large-scale system and architecture initiatives across long-term energy planning and trading domains, including data flows and integrations with neighboring systems (provisioning, asset management, reporting).
- Step in to unblock or lead complex engineering efforts (e.g., redesigning lineage, fixing systemic data quality issues, improving cross-team integrations).
- Design, build and modernize data and ML platforms and pipelines using Databricks, Delta/Unity Catalog, Airflow, dbt, Snowflake, Azure and related services.
- Modernize and refactor legacy data and ML workflows to enhance reliability, lineage, maintainability, metadata and master data management.
- Ensure engineering best practices in DevOps, CI/CD, infrastructure as code, observability, containerization and incident management are applied.
- Promote common platform patterns for ingestion, modeling, streaming/batch processing, feature engineering, ML development, experimentation, testing and serving.
- Shape and review technical designs to ensure robustness, scalability and alignment with enterprise architecture.
- Mentor and enable engineering teams: run design reviews, coach engineers, advise Engineering Managers on technical decisions, and assist with planning and hiring needs.
Requirements
Must-haves
- 8+ years of experience in data engineering or software engineering, with at least 3 years in a senior, staff or principal role driving multi-team technical decisions.
- Deep hands-on expertise with Databricks, Delta Lake / Unity Catalog, Airflow, Snowflake, dbt and Azure cloud services.
- Demonstrable experience designing, operating and stabilizing mission-critical, distributed data systems (end-to-end pipelines, event-driven architectures, platform integrations) where reliability, correctness and continuity are essential.
- Strong understanding of data architecture, data modeling, streaming, data lineage, data quality frameworks and metadata management.
- Good knowledge across ML engineering: feature engineering, model lifecycle management, experimentation, performance monitoring and MLOps.
- Solid knowledge of software engineering and DevOps fundamentals: CI/CD, infrastructure as code, observability, containerization and API design.
- Experience with timeseries analytics environments (databases, analytics, processing and modelling).
- Ability to drive alignment across engineering and product teams and strong written and verbal communication skills.
Nice to have
- Experience in energy markets, commodity trading, or near-real-time operational systems.
- Experience with forecasting platforms, ML lifecycle design and integrating data & ML systems into production.
- Familiarity with high-frequency or low-latency data processing patterns.
Benefits / What we offer
- Gross annual salary between €93,000 and €150,000 (including FlexBudget, 8% holiday allowance; depending on role a bonus or collective profit sharing).
- FlexBudget (can be paid out, used to buy extra holiday days or saved).
- Personal and professional growth support.
- Hybrid working: 40% at the office, 40% from home, 20% flexibly; with manager approval you may work abroad within approved countries up to 3 weeks/year (max 2 consecutively).
- Opportunity to have direct impact on Eneco’s mission to become climate neutral by 2035.
