Details

GitLab is hiring a Senior Engineering Manager within Delivery Enablement to lead four teams: Developer Tooling (Caproni), Observability Enablement, Performance Enablement, and Development Analytics. This role focuses on building a Kubernetes-first platform vision that supports GitLab.com, Dedicated, and thousands of self-managed deployments. You will combine people management with technical depth to create clarity around technical direction, strengthen execution, and align work with unified platform standards. The role reports to the Director of Delivery Enablement.

Responsibilities

  • Lead engineering teams working on developer tooling and platform capabilities to improve build times, observability, and delivery consistency.
  • Drive a Kubernetes-first platform vision that supports both cloud and self-managed/on-prem environments and balance tradeoffs for on-prem delivery.
  • Guide technical and organizational decisions across developer environments, packaging, local and hosted testing workflows, and integration with broader platform efforts.
  • Collaborate closely with engineering leaders, staff engineers, and adjacent teams to ensure DevEx investments align with platform architecture and operational needs.
  • Manage team health, performance, and prioritization in a remote environment; coach team members and address performance concerns.
  • Translate high-level strategy into actionable roadmaps with milestones and success metrics; measure success by delivery predictability and cycle time improvements.
  • Support adoption of AI-assisted development practices and help teams use CLI-based AI coding tools thoughtfully while maintaining engineering quality.
  • Improve execution by creating clarity, encouraging technical discussion, and enabling teams to make decisions when requirements evolve.

Requirements

  • Experience leading remote engineering teams through change and ambiguity, with a track record of building clarity and accountability.
  • Strong technical background in Kubernetes platforms and familiarity with standard Kubernetes concepts and interfaces (Services, CNI, API Gateway, etc.).
  • Working knowledge of Helm and containerized delivery models.
  • Experience with self-managed, on-prem, or bare metal environments (examples listed: OpenShift, OpenStack, Proxmox) and understanding of how they differ from cloud-first assumptions.
  • Ability to evaluate technical tradeoffs and contribute informed opinions on platform architecture and system integration across teams.
  • Experience with performance management and coaching, including supporting team members to improve or making difficult personnel decisions.
  • Hands-on experience with CLI-based AI coding tools and judgment to guide thoughtful adoption.
  • Relevant background in platform, infrastructure, SRE, or developer productivity roles, including designing team structures and organizational approaches.

About the team

We own key parts of GitLab's internal developer experience: helping engineers start projects, build business logic, package services consistently, and improve day-to-day workflows. The team works asynchronously across regions and partners with platform and engineering leadership to connect tools and workflows into a broader system. The organization is reducing reliance on older approaches, setting clearer platform standards, and building new foundations for how GitLab develops and ships software. See the team handbook page: https://handbook.gitlab.com/handbook/engineering/infrastructure-platforms/developer-experience/.
