Senior Machine Learning Manager - Ads Retrieval

Responsibilities

• Set Technical Vision & Strategy: Define and execute the roadmap for Reddit’s ads retrieval systems balancing innovation, model performance, scalability, and business priorities. Influence strategy across the broader Ads Engineering organization.
• Oversee ML Model and System Development: Lead design and development of ML models for large-scale retrieval including deep learning, embeddings, indexing, and early-stage ranking. Deliver end-to-end solutions from feature engineering to deployment and monitoring.
• Build & Scale a High-Impact Team: Recruit, mentor, and develop a diverse, collaborative team promoting continuous learning, experimentation, and technical excellence.
• Collaborate Cross-Functionally: Work with Product Managers, Data Scientists, Backend Engineers, and leadership to translate business goals into engineering solutions.
• Drive Operational Excellence: Champion system reliability, model quality, code maintainability, and improve engineer efficiency across the ML lifecycle.

Requirements

• Deep experience developing large-scale ML systems in production.
• Strong knowledge of early-stage ad ranking, embedding techniques, and candidate sourcing.
• Familiarity with auction systems, advertiser KPIs, or ad quality measurement.

Technical & Domain Expertise

• ML & Retrieval Systems: Expertise applying ML to large-scale information retrieval, recommendation systems, or ad retrieval.
• ML Frameworks & Lifecycle: Strong proficiency in TensorFlow or PyTorch with experience managing models from development to deployment and monitoring.
• Scalable Systems: Expertise in building high-throughput data pipelines and indexing systems.
• Ads Ecosystem: Experience with ads retrieval, targeting, and marketplace dynamics.

Pay Transparency: Base pay range for this position is $266,000 - $372,400 USD. Eligible for equity and potentially commission. Additional benefits include medical, dental, vision insurance, 401(k) with employer match, and generous vacation and parental leave.
