Responsibilities

• Improve observability, reliability and availability by defining and measuring key metrics
• Build automation and improve systems to eliminate toil and operations work
• Collaborate with our core infrastructure team to performance tune and optimize our cloud deployments (e.g. Docker, Terraform, Kubernetes, EC2)
• Collaborate with Coinbase product teams to reduce service disruptions and automate incident response
• Proactively find and analyze reliability problems and design and implement software for improvements
• Educate, mentor, and hold accountable engineering teams to improve system reliability and build a reliability-first culture
• Write high quality, well tested code to meet customer needs
• Debug extremely difficult technical problems and improve system operability and diagnosability
• Review all feature designs within product area and cross-cutting projects
• Own security, safety, scale, operational integrity, and architectural clarity of designs
• Build pipelines to integrate with third-party vendors
• Participate in on-call support rotation to troubleshoot and resolve urgent issues

Requirements

• 7+ years of experience in software engineering
• Experience designing, building, scaling, and maintaining production services
• Knowledge of service-oriented architecture
• Passion for building an open financial system
• Strong technical skills in system design and coding
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Strong skills in observability, debugging, and performance tuning
• Ability to explain technical concepts clearly
• Strong interpersonal skills working with varying engineer seniority levels
• Demonstrated critical thinking under pressure
• Willingness to dive into any layer of the stack for understanding and improvement
• On-call availability to resolve issues outside business hours

Nice to Haves

• Experience designing and building reliable, high throughput, low latency systems
• Familiarity with observability and monitoring systems (e.g. Kibana, Datadog)
• Experience in rapid growth environments
• Experience with Ruby, Go, Terraform
• Experience with cloud environments (AWS, GCP, Azure)
• Experience in highly regulated environments
• Experience writing company-facing blog posts and training materials
• Crypto-forward experience, including onchain activity such as Ethereum addresses, ENS, dApps, blockchain services
