Details
Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. The Consumer Products team is hiring a Senior Staff Software Engineer to serve as the technical lead for Claude’s core chat experience on mobile — the surface where most people meet Claude for the first time. You will own technical direction for the iOS and Android apps and shape how the chat interface evolves across mobile and web, working closely with product, design, and partner teams.
Responsibilities
- Lead the chat experience: own technical strategy for Claude’s core chat surface on mobile and influence its evolution across web and other clients.
- Build across the org: partner with teams (e.g., Claude Code, Cowork, Growth) so their work lands seamlessly in the app.
- Go deep on the platform: push into iOS and Android internals — rendering, text, streaming, performance, memory — to unlock experiences beyond the app layer.
- Raise the bar on craft: work side-by-side with design to ship an interface that feels fast and polished; build quality systems to maintain high standards.
- Shape the roadmap: bring an engineering point of view to product strategy — what to build, in what order, and why.
Requirements
- Demonstrated ability to lead technical direction across teams you don’t manage and to build credibility and influence.
- Deep expertise on at least one mobile platform (iOS preferred), including layers below the framework: rendering, performance, memory, text.
- Strong product instincts and attention to craft and detail in consumer software.
- Experience shipping consumer-scale mobile apps and establishing systems such as performance budgets, quality gates, and observability.
- Ability to work well with product, design, and partner engineering teams and make hard technical/product tradeoffs.
- Minimum education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
- Minimum years of experience: correlated with internal job level requirements for the position.
Strong candidates may also have
- Experience building AI/LLM-powered or real-time streaming chat interfaces.
- Depth across both iOS and Android, or native + cross-platform experience.
- A track record of seeing a multi-quarter technical strategy from proposal to outcome.
Compensation
- Annual Salary: $485,000 - $625,000 USD
Logistics
- Location: San Francisco, CA; New York City, NY; Seattle, WA (US offices).
- Location-based hybrid policy: staff are expected to be in one of the offices at least 25% of the time; some roles may require more time onsite.
