Details

A Software Engineer II owns the execution of technical elements in the Booking.com tech stack, products and processes. They implement technical solutions based on business requirements, estimate effort and impact, and deliver high-quality code. They balance production code and test automation quality, refactor both, and work with colleagues across roles to design, prioritise and implement technical tasks. Work can span product features, infrastructure automation, frameworks, tooling or services.

Responsibilities

  • Build software applications using relevant development languages and apply knowledge of systems, services and tools appropriate for the business area
  • Write readable and reusable code using standard patterns and libraries
  • Refactor and simplify code, introducing design patterns when necessary
  • Ensure application quality by following testing techniques and test strategy
  • Maintain data security, integrity and quality by following company standards and best practices
  • End-to-end service ownership: monitor application health and performance, set and monitor metrics, create runbooks/OpDocs, use continuous delivery and experimentation frameworks, manage deployment and operations in production
  • Address and resolve live production issues, mitigate customer impact within SLA, perform root cause analysis and contribute to postmortems
  • Provide architectural guidance and help evaluate architecture solutions considering cost, business and technology requirements
  • Apply engineering techniques (prototyping, spiking, vendor evaluation) to meet business needs and enable future enhancements
  • Identify and implement process, system and structural improvements
  • Communicate clearly and adaptably with stakeholders; ask relevant follow-up questions and practice active listening
  • This role may require participating in an on-call rotation
