Role overview

As an AI Tutor - Industrial/Systems Engineering specialist, you will enhance our AI capabilities by providing high-quality input and labels using proprietary software. You will collaborate closely with technical staff to support the training of new AI tasks, refine annotation tools, and select complex problems where your expertise can improve model performance. The role requires learning and adapting in a fast-paced environment and the ability to interpret and execute tasks based on evolving instructions.

Responsibilities

  • Use proprietary software applications to provide input/labels on defined projects.
  • Support and ensure the delivery of high-quality curated data.
  • Contribute to the training of new tasks and work closely with technical staff to develop and implement initiatives and technologies.
  • Interact with technical staff to help improve the design of efficient annotation tools.
  • Interpret, analyze, and execute tasks based on given instructions.

Requirements

  • Must possess a Master's or PhD in Industrial or Systems Engineering, or a highly-related field.
  • Proficiency in reading and writing, both informal and professional, in English.
  • Strong ability to navigate information resources, databases, and online resources.
  • Outstanding communication, interpersonal, analytical, and organizational capabilities.
  • Solid reading comprehension and capacity to exercise autonomous judgment with limited data/material.
  • Strong passion for and commitment to technological advancements and innovation.
  • For personal-device workers: Chromebook, Mac with macOS 11.0 or later, or Windows 10 or later.

Preferred skills and experience

  • PhD in Industrial or Systems Engineering.
  • Substantial professional experience solving real-world problems in this domain.
  • At least one publication in a reputable journal or outlet.
  • Previous AI tutoring experience.
  • Teaching experience (professor, teacher, or tutor).
  • Experience in technical writing, journalism, or professional writing.
  • Professional background as an industrial or systems engineer.

Location and other expectations

  • Tutor roles may be full-time, part-time, or contractor positions depending on needs and candidate fit.
  • Contractor hours vary widely by project scope and availability; contractors have flexibility to set their own hours. On average, most projects may involve at least 10 hours per week, though this is not a fixed commitment.
  • Tutor roles may be performed remotely from any location worldwide, subject to legal eligibility, time-zone compatibility, and role-specific needs.
  • For US-based candidates, xAI cannot hire in the states of Wyoming and Illinois.
  • xAI is unable to provide visa sponsorship.

Compensation and benefits

  • US-based candidates: $45/hour - $75/hour depending on experience, skills, education, geographic location, and qualifications. International candidate compensation details provided during recruitment.
