xAI’s mission is to create AI systems that can accurately understand the universe and aid humanity in its pursuit of knowledge. The team is small, highly motivated, and focused on engineering excellence. The organization expects hands-on contributors, strong prioritization, and excellent communication.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate, refine, and create elite-level writing in a variety of genres and formats to advance Grok's capabilities in one or more Writing Specialty areas.
  • Use proprietary software to label, annotate, and refine AI-generated text for clarity, structure, engagement, and domain-specific accuracy.
  • Utilize one or more Writing Specialty areas of expertise (e.g., Creative Fiction Writing, Game Writing, Technical Writing) to deliver high-quality curated data to improve Grok's writing outputs for specific audiences and use cases.
  • Collaborate with engineers and other specialists to develop tasks that advance AI writing proficiency.
  • Improve annotation tools and workflows for efficiency.
  • Pivot as needed to work on secondary tasks to improve Grok in writing-based and non-writing-based areas.

Requirements

  • Proven proficiency in English and qualification for at least one chosen Writing Specialty. Applicants must provide verifiable proof (URLs, ISBNs, award sites, etc.). No NDA-covered or unverifiable claims; such claims result in automatic rejection.
  • Ability to critique and refine AI-generated text for readability, logical flow, grammar, consistency, style, creativity, and reader immersion.
  • Strong attention to detail and experience using reference materials and style guides for accurate, style-adherent annotations.
  • Flawless grammar, spelling, clarity, and precision.
  • Superlative communication, interpersonal, analytical, and editorial skills.
  • Commitment to developing AI that produces expert-level writing.
  • Highly adaptable and able to work under deadlines.

Writing Specialty qualification summaries (applicants must meet the qualifications for at least one specialty listed and provide verifiable proof):

  • Creative Fiction Writing: high-level publishing or outlet credentials (e.g., major publishing deals, sales, short stories in major outlets, major award recognition).
  • Game Writing: 5+ years professional game writing, portfolio showing branching narratives and published credits.
  • Technical Writing: 5+ years technical writing, public portfolio of high-impact docs, CPTC or equivalent certification, Bachelor's degree or higher in relevant field.
  • Nonfiction Writing: 5+ years, 3+ published books, public portfolio, awards/funding/memberships.
  • Journalistic Writing: 5+ years professional journalism, portfolio with bylines in reputable outlets, degree preferred.
  • Copywriting: 5+ years, proven high-impact campaigns, public portfolio with quantified impacts, degree preferred.
  • Web Writing: 5+ years web content experience, SEO expertise, content lifecycle experience, certifications (e.g., Google Analytics), degree preferred.
  • Grant Writing: 5+ years, proven record securing funding > $1M, portfolio of narratives/budgets.
  • Legal Writing: JD, 5+ years practice or teaching, familiarity with legal style guides.
  • Medical Writing: Master’s or higher in life sciences, 5+ years medical writing, authorship in peer-reviewed outlets.
  • Academic Writing: 5+ years, extensive peer-reviewed publications, PhD required for top-tier requirements.
  • Poetry Writing: advanced degree in creative writing/literature, publications in reputable journals/presses, awards or residencies.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Familiarity with AI tools or prompt engineering.
  • Ability to teach or critique writing collaboratively at technical and non-technical levels.
  • Familiarity with Google Workspace, Slack, Notion, and other remote collaboration tools.

Location and Other Expectations

  • Tutor roles may be offered as full-time, part-time, or contractor positions. Contractors have flexible hours; many projects may involve at least ~10 hours/week on average but no fixed commitment is required.
  • Roles may be performed remotely from any location worldwide, subject to legal eligibility, time-zone compatibility, and role-specific needs.
  • For US-based candidates: the company cannot hire in Wyoming or Illinois.
  • xAI is unable to provide visa sponsorship.
  • Device requirements for those working from a personal device: Chromebook, Mac with macOS 11.0 or later, or Windows 10 or later.

Compensation and Benefits

  • US-based candidates: $45/hour - $125/hour depending on subspecialty, experience, skills, education, geographic location, and qualifications. International candidates: information provided during recruitment.
  • Benefits vary by employment type, location, and jurisdiction. Benefits for eligible U.S. based positions include health insurance, 401(k) plan, and paid sick leave.
