Details
OpenAI's Intelligence & Investigations team identifies and investigates misuses of our products to enable partner teams to develop data-backed policy and scaled safety mitigations. As an Abuse Investigator you will detect and review malicious uses and activities on our platform, disrupt actors that abuse our policies, and respond to time-sensitive escalations that are not caught by existing tools.
Responsibilities
- Review leads, investigate activity, and disrupt abusive operations in partnership with policy, legal, and integrity teams focused on violent and terrorist activities, especially time-sensitive threats to life
- Develop abuse signals and tracking strategies to proactively detect harmful activity on the platform
- Identify operational workflow improvements and processes that expedite work while mitigating risk
- Communicate investigation findings to internal stakeholders and, at times, external audiences
- Develop a categorical understanding of products and data, and work with technical teams to improve data and tooling
- Support an on-call process requiring rapid threat triaging, investigation, mitigation, sound judgment, and concise briefings to senior leadership
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams and contribute positively to team culture
Requirements
- Deep expertise in counterterrorism and violent activity mitigation (experience from law enforcement, legal, government, crisis response, behavioral analysis units, special operations, or similar environments)
- Strong familiarity with technical investigations using SQL and Python
- At least 12+ years of experience tracking or assessing threat actors in counterterrorism and/or violent activity domains, or conducting professional casework involving violent offenders, extremist actors, or high-risk individuals
- At least two years of experience helping to develop automated approaches to accomplish investigative work
- Experience presenting analytic work in public or policy settings
- Ability to work PST hours; role includes resolving urgent escalations outside normal work hours and on-call shift work
- Capacity to handle sensitive, potentially disturbing content (including sexual, violent, and child-safety related material) and demonstrated resiliency in high-stress environments
- Speaking another language in addition to English is a plus

- Remote-friendly role; you may also work from OpenAI offices in San Francisco, New York City, or Washington, DC
- Role will operate on PST hours and include on-call shifts and urgent escalations outside normal hours
