Details

OpenAI’s Financial Engineering (FinEng) team powers how revenue flows through its products, including pricing and packaging, checkout, payments, subscriptions, and the financial infrastructure behind them. The team partners with Product, Engineering, Risk, Finance, and Go-to-Market to make paying for OpenAI products seamless, reliable, and efficient worldwide.

As a Data Scientist on FinEng, you will own the analytics and experimentation that improve checkout and payments, subscriptions, and pricing and monetization systems. You will define important metrics, build source-of-truth data assets, and design experiments that increase conversion, reduce churn and payment failures, and expand global payment method coverage. Your work will influence revenue, customer experience, and international scale.

This role is based in San Francisco, California. OpenAI uses a hybrid work model requiring three days in the office per week and offers relocation assistance to new employees.

Responsibilities

  • Own checkout and payments analytics and experimentation across payment methods and locales, including bank transfers and emerging payment rails, while improving conversion and monitoring risk and latency.
  • Build and run the experimentation program for in-house checkout by defining success metrics and guardrails, executing staged rollouts, and using offline incrementality when online tests are not feasible.
  • Create operational visibility and source-of-truth data with FinEng Data Engineering, including team-level metrics, SLAs, and self-service dashboards that drive proactive action.
  • Lead subscription, retention, and monetization analytics.
  • Support launch readiness for new subscription features.
  • Reduce involuntary churn through targeted retrials and nudges.
  • Develop elasticity and foreign exchange frameworks supporting pricing optimality.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in a quantitative role such as data science, product analytics, or experimentation, preferably in high-growth or fintech environments.
  • Fluency in SQL and Python.
  • Track record of designing and interpreting A/B tests and quasi-experiments.
  • Experience building product metrics from scratch and operationalizing them for decision-making.
  • Excellent communication skills with product managers, engineers, risk and finance partners, and executives.
  • Strategic judgment beyond statistical significance testing, with the ability to reason clearly about tradeoffs among conversion, risk, cost, and user experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with payments, checkout, or subscription analytics, including payment service providers, bank rails, disputes and refunds, risk, or e-commerce.
  • Background in offline incrementality methods, uplift modeling, CUPED, causal inference, or counterfactual evaluation.
  • Experience with internationalization, local payments, foreign exchange, and pricing and packaging strategy.
  • Experience building operational analytics, alerting, and SLIs/SLOs.
  • Experience partnering closely with data engineering.

Benefits

  • Equity, performance-related bonus for eligible employees, and benefits in addition to base pay.
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and their families, with employer contributions to Health Savings Accounts.
  • Pre-tax accounts for Health FSA, Dependent Care FSA, and commuter expenses.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with employer match.
  • Paid parental leave, medical leave, and caregiver leave.
  • Paid time off, paid company holidays, office closures, and paid sick and safe time.
  • Mental health and wellness support.
  • Employer-paid basic life and disability coverage.
  • Annual learning and development stipend.
  • Daily office meals and eligible meal delivery credits.
  • Relocation support for eligible employees.
  • Additional taxable fringe benefits may include charitable donation matching and wellness stipends.
