At Coinbase, our mission is to increase economic freedom in the world. It’s a massive, ambitious opportunity that demands the best of us, every day, as we build the emerging onchain platform — and with it, the future global financial system.

To achieve our mission, we’re seeking a candidate who is passionate about crypto and blockchain technology, eager to leave their mark, and comfortable working with high-caliber colleagues in an intense, feedback-driven culture. Many roles at Coinbase are remote-first but not remote-only; in-person participation is required throughout the year for team and company-wide offsites.

Team Description

The manager of the Client Tooling team will be responsible for overseeing the strategy and execution of improving Coinbase frontend engineers' developer experience through shared tooling and frontend libraries. The role is customer-focused (internal engineers) and requires strong collaboration with other teams for alignment.

Responsibilities

  • Build and manage engineering teams to guide development of features, services, and infrastructure across both web and mobile.
  • Coach direct reports to have positive organizational impact and support their career growth.
  • Collaborate with engineers, designers, product managers, and senior leadership to translate vision into a tangible quarterly roadmap. Break down complex projects into smaller pieces and lead iterative design and implementation.
  • Serve as a thoughtful technical voice within the team, contributing to architectural decisions and fostering a culture of high-quality code and engineering processes.
  • Work closely with talent acquisition to identify and recruit exceptional engineers who align with Coinbase's culture.
  • Contribute to and own processes that drive engineering quality and meet engineering SLAs.
  • Be hands-on when needed—writing/reviewing code or technical documents, participating in on-call rotations, leading incidents, triaging/troubleshooting bugs.

Requirements

  • At least 7 years of experience developing web apps and shipping user-facing features with JavaScript and modern, component-based JS frameworks like React.
  • Familiarity with current trends and best practices in front-end architecture, including performance, security, and usability.
  • At least 2 years of Engineering Manager experience managing front-end engineers.
  • Ability to balance long-term strategic thinking with short-term planning.
  • Willingness and ability to be hands-on when required (code reviews, on-call rotations, incident leadership, bug triage).

Nice to Haves

  • Prior experience leading a Developer Experience/Productivity, Platform, or similar domain team.
  • Previous experience at a fast-paced, high-growth internet/software company.
