Engineering Manager (Consumer - Trading)

Coinbase is seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to join the Trading team to build and scale the core systems that power crypto trading at Coinbase. From Simple Trade for everyday users to Advanced Trade for professionals, to Derivatives and Decentralized (DEX) trading, this role sits at the intersection of crypto, trading infrastructure, and consumer product — tackling engineering challenges while contributing directly to Coinbase’s core business.

Responsibilities

• Build and manage full-stack engineering teams to guide development of features, services, and infrastructure across web and mobile.
• Coach direct reports to have a positive impact on the organization and support career growth.
• Collaborate with engineers, designers, product managers, and senior leadership to translate vision into a tangible quarterly roadmap; break down complex projects and lead iterative design and implementation.
• Act as a thoughtful technical voice within the team, aiding in architectural decisions and fostering a culture of high-quality code and engineering processes.
• Collaborate with Product and Engineering teams to ensure delivery and operation of multi-tenanted, distributed systems at scale.
• Work with talent acquisition to identify and recruit engineers aligned with Coinbase's culture and products.
• Contribute to and own processes that drive engineering quality and meet engineering SLAs.
• Power highly performant, highly available systems for traders worldwide and architect robust systems that support many instrument types (Spot, Futures, Perpetual Futures, etc.).
• Work closely with product and design to articulate a best-in-class product experience and translate ideas into high-value features customers love.
• Be hands-on when needed: writing/reviewing code or technical documents, participating in on-call rotations, leading incidents, and triaging/troubleshooting bugs.

Requirements

• At least 7 years of experience in software engineering, especially with web-scale traffic.
• At least 2 years of engineering management experience.
• Strong understanding of high-quality code and effective software engineering processes.
• Execution-focused mindset; able to navigate ambiguity and deliver results.
• Ability to balance long-term strategy with short-term planning.
• Experience creating, delivering, and operating multi-tenanted, distributed systems at scale.
• Experience designing, building, scaling, and maintaining production services as they evolve over time.
• High bar for product excellence, pairing customer obsession with comprehensive observability.
• Willingness to be hands-on (code reviews, on-call, incident leadership) and participate in operational processes.
• Passion for building an open financial system and alignment with Coinbase’s mission.

Nice to Haves

• Experience on active trading systems or other high-availability financial systems.
• Personal experience trading crypto or other financial instruments.
• Experience with rapid company growth (startup → mid-size).
• Experience upgrading legacy systems or re-architecting next-generation systems.
• Experience with Golang, MongoDB, Redis.
• Crypto-forward experience (onchain activity, interacting with Ethereum addresses, ENS, dApps, blockchain-based services).

• Remote-first role: many Coinbase roles are remote-first but not remote-only. In-person participation is required throughout the year (team and company offsites are held multiple times annually; attendance is expected and supported).

• Pay Range (target annual salary): $218,025—$256,500 USD. Full-time offers also include bonus eligibility, equity eligibility, and benefits (medical, dental, vision, 401(k), etc.).
• Answers to crypto-related questions may be used to evaluate onchain experience.
