Ready to be pushed beyond what you think you’re capable of?

At Coinbase, our mission is to increase economic freedom in the world. It’s a massive, ambitious opportunity that demands the best of us, every day, as we build the emerging onchain platform — and with it, the future global financial system.

To achieve our mission, Coinbase seeks a candidate who is passionate about crypto and blockchain technology, eager to leave a mark, comfortable with high expectations, and open to feedback. The role sits on the Coinbase Institutional team building products for institutional customers (Coinbase Prime, Coinbase Advanced Trade, Custody, Commerce, Exchange). Engineers on the team work on trading, financing, staking, governance, custody, and API integrations across a diverse tech stack.

This role is remote-first but not remote-only: in-person participation (team and company offsites) is required throughout the year.

Responsibilities

  • Lead engineering teams building mission-critical systems for institutional products.
  • Collaborate with engineers, designers, product managers, and senior leadership to translate vision into a roadmap; break down complex projects and lead iterative design and implementation.
  • Serve as a technical voice on the team: make architectural decisions and drive a culture of high quality and operational excellence for distributed systems at scale.
  • Be hands-on when required: write/review code or technical documents, participate in on-call rotations, lead incident responses, and triage/troubleshoot bugs.
  • Coach direct reports and support their career growth.
  • Work with talent/recruiting to identify and hire engineers aligned with Coinbase culture.
  • Contribute to processes that drive engineering quality and meet engineering SLAs.

Requirements

  • At least 7 years of experience in software engineering.
  • At least 1 year of engineering management experience.
  • Ability to balance long-term strategic thinking with short-term planning.
  • Experience creating, delivering, and operating multi-tenant, distributed systems at scale.
  • Hands-on capability for coding, on-call rotations, incident leadership, and troubleshooting.
  • Passion for building an open financial system.

Nice to haves

  • Experience in rapid company growth (e.g., scaling from ~10 to hundreds of engineers).
  • Experience with blockchains (Bitcoin, Ethereum) and onchain activity.
  • Familiarity with Golang, Ruby, Docker, Sinatra, Rails, Postgres.
  • Background building financial, high-reliability, or security-focused systems.
  • Crypto-forward experience including interacting with Ethereum addresses, ENS, dApps, and other blockchain-based services.

Compensation

  • Pay Range (target annual salary): $217,900 — $217,900 CAD. Full-time offers may include target bonus, target equity, and benefits (medical, dental, vision).

Benefits

  • Extended health care (coordinates with provincial coverage)

  • Virtual health care (Consult+)
  • Life & accident insurance
  • Disability coverage
  • Employee Stock Purchase Plan (ESPP)
