At Coinbase, our mission is to increase economic freedom in the world. You’ll join the Coinbase Institutional team building products for institutional customers (Coinbase Prime, Coinbase Advanced Trade, Custody, Commerce, Exchange) across trading, financing, staking, governance, custody and API integrations. The role balances individual contribution with anchoring new projects, setting technical direction, and mentoring engineers. Coinbase is remote‑first but not remote‑only; in‑person participation is required throughout the year and team/company offsites are held multiple times annually.
Responsibilities
- Lead engineering teams building mission‑critical systems that power institutional products.
- Translate vision into a roadmap with engineers, designers, product managers, and senior leadership; break down complex projects and lead iterative design and implementation.
- Serve as a thoughtful technical voice: drive architectural decisions, operational excellence, and engineering SLAs.
- Collaborate with Product and Engineering teams to ensure delivery and operation of complex, distributed systems at scale.
- Be hands‑on as needed: write/review code, participate in on‑call rotations, lead incident responses, triage and troubleshoot bugs.
- Coach direct reports to support career growth and positive organizational impact.
- Work with talent teams to recruit engineers aligned with Coinbase culture.
- Contribute to processes that improve engineering quality and meet SLAs.
Requirements
- At least 7 years of experience in software engineering.
- At least 1 year of engineering management experience.
- Ability to balance long‑term strategic thinking with short‑term planning.
- Experience creating, delivering, and operating multi‑tenanted, distributed systems at scale.
- Comfortable being hands‑on when needed (coding, on‑call, incident leadership, troubleshooting).
- Passion for building an open financial system and for Coinbase’s mission.
Nice to haves
- Experience with rapid company growth (e.g., scaling from ~10 to 100s of engineers).
- Experience with blockchains (Bitcoin, Ethereum) and on‑chain activity.
- Familiarity with Golang, Ruby, Docker, Sinatra, Rails, Postgres.
- Experience building financial, high‑reliability, or security systems.
- Crypto‑forward experience (interacting with Ethereum addresses, ENS, dApps, blockchain services).
Compensation & Benefits
- Pay Range: $217,900—$217,900 CAD (target annual salary). Full‑time offers also include bonus eligibility, equity eligibility, and benefits (medical, dental, vision).
- Benefits include extended health care, dental, vision, virtual health (Consult+), life & accident insurance, disability coverage, ESPP, wellness stipend, mobile/internet reimbursement, connections stipend, learning & development allowance, EAP, travel medical policy, fertility benefits, and generous time off/leave policy.
