While many roles at Coinbase are remote-first, we are not remote-only. In-person participation is required throughout the year. Team and company-wide offsites are held multiple times annually to foster collaboration, connection, and alignment. Attendance is expected and fully supported.

The mission of the Platform Product Group engineers is to build a trusted, scalable and compliant platform to operate with speed, efficiency and quality. Our teams build and maintain the platforms critical to the existence of Coinbase. There are many teams that make up this group which include Product Foundations (i.e. Identity, Payment, Risk, Proofing & Regulatory, Finhub), Machine Learning, Customer Experience, and Infrastructure.

The Machine Learning Platform team builds the foundational components for feature engineering and training/serving ML models at Coinbase. The platform is used to combat fraud, personalize user experiences, and to analyze blockchains. The role includes work across stream processing, distributed training, and highly available online services.

Responsibilities

• Lead a team of engineers to build the next generation of the Machine Learning Platform.
• Form a deep understanding of Machine Learning Engineers’ needs and current capabilities and gaps.
• Collaborate with engineers, designers, product managers, and senior leadership to translate vision into a tangible quarterly roadmap; break down complex projects and lead iterative design and implementation.
• Coach reports on building high-quality software and develop their skills.
• Work with talent organization to identify and recruit engineers who align with Coinbase's culture.
• Raise engineering standards to maintain high availability and low latency on critical ML systems.
• Collaborate across the industry and act as a thought leader in MLOps.
• Be hands-on when needed: write/review code or technical docs, participate in on-call rotations, lead incidents, triage/troubleshoot bugs.

Requirements

• 7+ years of industry experience as a Software Engineer, with at least 2 years managing a team of engineers.
• Deep understanding of distributed systems.
• Strong sense of system and software design; ability to bring clarity to complex technical requirements.
• Treat other engineers as customers with an obsessive focus on delivering a seamless developer experience.
• Execution-focused mindset; capable of navigating ambiguity and delivering results.
• Mastery of fundamentals enabling quick context switching across varied technologies while operating at a high level.
• Ability to be hands-on: code review, on-call participation, incident leadership, troubleshooting.

Nice to Have

• Experience building ML models and working with ML systems.
• Experience working on a platform team and building developer tooling.

Pay Range

• $218,025 — $256,500 USD (target annual salary; full-time offers also include bonus eligibility, equity eligibility, and benefits including medical, dental, vision and 401(k)).
