Engineering Manager - Machine Learning Platform

At Coinbase you will help build the Machine Learning Platform used for feature engineering, training and serving ML models that combat fraud, personalize user experiences, and analyze blockchains. The role sits in the Platform Product Group, which includes Product Foundations, Machine Learning, Customer Experience, and Infrastructure. This is a remote-first role with in-person participation expected throughout the year for team and company-wide offsites.

Responsibilities

• Lead a team of engineers to build the next generation of the Machine Learning Platform.
• Form a deep understanding of Machine Learning Engineers’ needs and identify capability gaps.
• Collaborate with engineers, designers, product managers, and senior leadership to translate vision into quarterly roadmaps and break down complex projects for iterative delivery.
• Coach and grow direct reports, raising engineering standards and quality of software.
• Work with talent teams to recruit engineers who fit Coinbase’s culture and product needs.
• Ensure high availability and low latency of critical ML systems; participate in on-call rotations and lead incident response.
• Be a cross-industry collaborator and thought leader in MLOps and platform engineering.

Requirements

• 7+ years of industry experience as a Software Engineer, with at least 2 years managing a team of engineers.
• Deep understanding of distributed systems.
• Strong sense of design and ability to clarify complex technical requirements.
• Customer-focused approach toward internal engineering users of the platform.
• Execution-focused mindset; comfortable navigating ambiguity and delivering results.
• Mastery of fundamentals enabling quick movement across varied technologies.
• Willingness to be hands-on when needed: writing/reviewing code or technical documents, participating in on-call rotations and incident leadership, triaging and troubleshooting.

Nice to have

• Experience building ML models and working with ML systems.
• Experience working on a platform team and building developer tooling.

Compensation & Benefits

• Pay Range: $217,900 — $217,900 USD (full-time offers also include target bonus, target equity, and benefits such as medical, dental, and vision).
