Engineering Manager - Machine Learning Platform

At Coinbase, our mission is to increase economic freedom in the world. The Platform Product Group builds trusted, scalable and compliant platforms used across Coinbase. The Machine Learning Platform team builds foundational components for feature engineering and training/serving ML models used to combat fraud, personalize user experiences, and analyze blockchains. This role will work across stream processing, distributed training, and highly available online services and will require collaboration with engineers, product managers, designers, and senior leadership.

Responsibilities

• Lead a team of engineers to build the next generation of the Machine Learning Platform.
• Understand ML engineers' needs and current capabilities/gaps for feature engineering and model training/serving.
• Collaborate with cross-functional partners to translate vision into a quarterly roadmap; break down complex projects and lead iterative design and implementation.
• Coach reports on building high-quality software and grow their skills.
• Work with talent organization to identify and recruit engineers aligned with Coinbase's culture.
• Raise engineering standards to maintain high availability and low latency for critical ML systems.
• Collaborate across the industry and act as a thought leader in MLOps.
• Be hands-on when needed: write/review code or technical documents, participate in on-call rotations and incident leadership, triage and troubleshoot bugs.

Requirements

• 7+ years of industry experience as a software engineer, with at least 2 years managing a team of engineers.
• Deep understanding of distributed systems.
• Strong system design skills and the ability to bring clarity to complex technical requirements.
• Customer-focused approach toward internal engineering users; obsessive focus on delivering a seamless developer experience.
• Execution-focused mindset; able to navigate ambiguity and deliver results.
• Mastery of fundamentals to work across varied technologies and operate at a high level.
• Willingness and ability to be hands-on (code, on-call, incidents, triage).

Nice to Have

• Experience building ML models and working with ML systems.
• Experience working on a platform team and building developer tooling.

Work Location & Culture

• Remote-first role (#LI-Remote). In-person participation and team/company offsites are required throughout the year; attendance is expected and supported.

Pay Range

• $217,900—$217,900 CAD (target annual salary). Full-time offers also include bonus eligibility, equity eligibility, and benefits (medical, dental, vision).
