Community

Messaging is central to fostering connections among Airbnb guests and hosts globally. The messaging platform team’s mission is to build reliable, performant, and scalable systems powering Airbnb’s second most used surface - messaging. The team collaborates with diverse partner teams to develop platform solutions enabling essential use cases such as booking, customer support, and cohosting.

Responsibilities

• Lead a team of very senior, highly motivated, high-achieving engineers.
• Collaborate with product managers, designers, and engineering leaders to plan and deliver a wide range of new and improved features and capabilities powering Airbnb messaging.
• Shape ambitious technical and product visions and realize them.
• Define, prioritize, and execute the roadmap with product, design, and other stakeholders.
• Plan, sequence, make tradeoffs, and deliver new features and platform capabilities with engineers.
• Monitor system health and invest in maintenance for long-term success.
• Foster a culture of engineering excellence.
• Hire and coach exceptional engineering talent; conduct one-on-one meetings to understand motivations and dynamics.

Requirements

• 9+ years of experience, including 3-5+ years managing engineering teams in fast-paced tech environments.
• Strong expertise in building large-scale backend systems and user-facing features, preferably related to messaging platforms.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with experience interacting across engineering teams and cross-functional partners.
• Flexible leadership style adaptable to different working situations.
• Proven track record of leading and shipping large initiatives with significant business impact.
• Promote operational excellence focusing on quality, reliability, and availability.
• Sound judgment balancing short-term business needs with long-term technical quality.
• Strong ability to influence decision-making among diverse stakeholders.
• Experience fostering an inclusive and engaging team environment.
• Skilled in identifying, retaining, growing, and acquiring critical talent.

Location

This position is US - Remote Eligible. Occasional work at an Airbnb office or offsites may be required. Candidates must reside in a US state where Airbnb, Inc. has a registered entity (some states excluded).

Compensation

The base pay range is $204,000 to $255,000 USD, subject to factors like experience and business needs. The role may also be eligible for bonus, equity, benefits, and Employee Travel Credits.
