Developer Experience (DevX) is responsible for making sure all engineers at Coinbase build high-quality products while being productive and engaged. We provide infrastructure, libraries, frameworks, and tooling to make it easier and faster to build high-quality applications. This position is for the Engineering Manager responsible for the Data Layer Team. The Data Layer Team is responsible for the health of the GraphQL Service and the front-end data fetching library. These are T0 services that are critical to the foundation of Coinbase apps infrastructure, processing billions of operations per month.

While many roles at Coinbase are remote-first, we are not remote-only. In-person participation is required throughout the year. Team and company-wide offsites are held multiple times annually; attendance is expected and fully supported.

Responsibilities

  • Build and manage engineering teams to guide the development of features, services, and infrastructure.
  • Coach direct reports to have a positive impact on the organization and support their career growth.
  • Collaborate with engineers, designers, product managers, and senior leadership to translate vision into a tangible quarterly roadmap. Break down complex projects into smaller pieces and lead iterative design and implementation.
  • Serve as a thoughtful technical voice within the team, aiding in architectural decisions and fostering a culture of high-quality code and engineering processes.
  • Collaborate with Product and Engineering teams to ensure successful delivery and operation of multi-tenanted, distributed systems at scale.
  • Work with talent organization to identify and recruit engineers who align with Coinbase's culture.
  • Contribute to and take ownership of processes that drive engineering quality and meet engineering SLAs.
  • Be hands-on when needed: write/review code or technical documents, participate in on-call rotations, lead incidents, and triage/troubleshoot bugs.

Requirements

  • At least 7 years of experience in software engineering.
  • At least 2 years of engineering management experience.
  • Strong understanding of high-quality code and effective software engineering processes.
  • Execution-focused mindset; able to navigate ambiguity and deliver results.
  • Ability to balance long-term strategic thinking with short-term planning.
  • Experience creating, delivering, and operating multi-tenanted, distributed systems at scale.
  • Willingness to be hands-on: coding, reviewing, on-call, incident leadership, triaging bugs.
  • Passion for building an open financial system and belief in the power of crypto and blockchain technology.

Nice to haves

  • Prior experience leading a Developer Experience/Productivity, Platform, or similar domain team.
  • Previous experience at a fast-paced, high-growth internet/software company.

Compensation

  • Target annual salary range (depending on work location): $211,650—$249,000 USD.
  • Full-time offers also include bonus eligibility, equity eligibility, and benefits (medical, dental, vision, 401(k)).
