At Coinbase, the Platform Product Group builds trusted, scalable, and compliant platform capabilities that operate with speed, efficiency and quality. The Risk Platform Team focuses on managing financial risks by building flexible, scalable, and customizable engineering systems to detect and prevent fraud across real-time, near-real-time, and scheduled workflows.

This role is an Engineering Manager for Payments Risk within the Platform organization. The team partners closely with ML engineers, MLE/MLP, risk analysts, product, design, and senior leadership to deliver multi-tenant, distributed systems that operate at scale. The environment is remote-first but requires in-person participation throughout the year (team and company offsites). Full-time offers include target bonus, target equity, and benefits.

Responsibilities

• Develop and execute the multi-year strategy for Payments Risk engineering in collaboration with cross-functional partners (MLE, MLP, Risk Analysts).
• Mentor and guide engineers to foster professional growth, career development, and meaningful contributions to the organization.
• Provide technical leadership and support the team in making sound architectural decisions; ensure engineering quality and adherence to SLAs.
• Translate vision into actionable quarterly roadmaps in partnership with engineers, designers, product managers, and senior leadership.
• Recruit and hire exceptional engineers in collaboration with the talent team.
• Foster a positive and inclusive team environment aligned with Coinbase's culture.
• Be hands-on when needed: write/review code or technical documents, participate in on-call rotations, lead incidents, triage and troubleshoot bugs.

Requirements

• At least 7 years of experience in software engineering.
• At least 2 years of engineering management experience.
• At least 1 year of experience in Risk, ML and/or Payments domain.
• Strong understanding of high-quality code and effective software engineering processes.
• Execution-focused mindset; ability to navigate ambiguity and deliver results.
• Ability to balance long-term strategic thinking with short-term planning.
• Experience creating, delivering, and operating multi-tenant, distributed systems at scale.
• Willingness and ability to be hands-on with coding, on-call, incident leadership, and troubleshooting.
• Passion for building an open financial system and belief in crypto/blockchain technology.

Nice to haves

• Experience building financial, high-reliability, or security systems.
• Exposure to or experience building online fraud prevention systems.

Compensation & Benefits

• Pay Range: $218,025 — $256,500 USD (target annual salary). Full-time offers also include target bonus + target equity + benefits.
