The Platform Product Group builds trusted, scalable and compliant platforms critical to Coinbase — including Product Foundations (Identity, Payment, Risk, Proofing & Regulatory, Finhub), Machine Learning, Customer Experience, and Infrastructure.

The Risk Platform Team fosters business growth by managing financial risks and building flexible, scalable, and customizable engineering systems to detect and prevent fraud across real-time, near-real-time, and scheduled workflows. The role requires in-person participation throughout the year (team and company-wide offsites are held multiple times annually).

Responsibilities

• Develop and execute the multi-year strategy for Payments Risk engineering in collaboration with cross-functional partners (MLE, MLP, Risk Analysts).
• Mentor and guide team members to make meaningful contributions and foster professional growth and career development.
• Provide technical leadership by supporting architectural decisions and ensuring engineering quality through adherence to SLAs.
• Partner with engineers, designers, product managers, and senior leadership to translate vision into actionable quarterly roadmaps.
• Collaborate with the talent team to recruit and hire exceptional engineers.
• Foster a positive and inclusive team environment aligned with Coinbase's culture.
• Be hands-on when needed: write/review code or technical documents, participate in on-call rotations and incident leadership, triage and troubleshoot production issues.

Requirements

• At least 7 years of experience in software engineering.
• At least 2 years of engineering management experience.
• At least 1 year of experience in Risk, Machine Learning (ML) and/or Payments domain.
• Strong understanding of high-quality code and effective software engineering processes.
• Execution-focused mindset; able to navigate ambiguity and deliver results.
• Ability to balance long-term strategic thinking with short-term planning.
• Experience creating, delivering, and operating multi-tenanted, distributed systems at scale.
• Willingness and ability to be hands-on (coding, on-call rotations, incident leadership, troubleshooting).

Nice to haves:

• Experience building financial, high-reliability, or security systems.
• Exposure to online fraud prevention systems or prior experience building them.

Compensation and Benefits

Pay Range: $218,025—$256,500 USD (target annual salary; full-time offers also include bonus eligibility, equity eligibility, and benefits including medical, dental, vision, and 401(k)).
