The OpenAI Search team is reimagining the search experience for the AI era. Working across research, engineering, product, and design, the team brings real-time information into ChatGPT and the API, innovating across the full stack to create an experience that is fast, reliable, and delightful. This role is based in San Francisco, CA and uses a hybrid work model (3 days in office per week). Relocation assistance is offered to new employees.

Responsibilities

• Hire and manage a diverse, high-performing engineering team focused on product infrastructure for search.
• Evolve search systems to deliver speed and reliability, collaborating across research, infrastructure, and product teams to enable step-change improvements.
• Coach engineers to maximize impact and growth; create an inclusive culture that encourages radical candor and challenges groupthink.
• Own strategy and execution for making search fast, reliable, and maintainable while enabling rapid, safe innovation.

Requirements

• 10+ years of engineering experience, including 5+ years of engineering management experience.
• Strong passion and experience building and evolving large-scale distributed systems focused on speed, reliability, and maintainability.
• Comfortable operating in ambiguity and rapid change; willing and able to go deep into technical details to help solve problems.
• Proven track record of coaching engineers and attracting/hiring top technical talent for competitive roles.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to articulate a technical vision that resonates with candidates and team members.

Benefits & Compensation

• Base salary range listed: $325,000 – $405,000 per year; offers equity and additional performance-related bonuses for eligible employees.
