Details
The Cloud Stability team manages Bloomberg’s private cloud — a large, critical infrastructure hosting over 100k virtual machines that support Bloomberg's flagship Terminal and News systems. The team’s mission is to guarantee high-availability infrastructure through automation, observability, maintenance, failure response, and predictive capacity planning. The private cloud includes Bloomberg Cloud Compute (BCC) built on open-source technologies and a VMWare-based commercial software cloud.
Responsibilities
- Define and drive strategic execution for operating the private cloud to continuously enable engineering workflows.
- Ensure reliability of cloud services and establish comprehensive observability across the fleet.
- Manage infrastructure maintenance, failure response, and predictive capacity planning.
- Develop automation and orchestration (e.g., coordinate competing automation workflows).
- Organize and prioritize the team backlog and collaborate with stakeholders to deliver high-impact work.
- Inspire and motivate the team, support individual growth, and maintain high quality engineering practices.
- Build partnerships across internal and external teams and articulate a future-state vision and roadmap for the Bloomberg cloud.
- Example initiatives: capacity management strategy, orchestration to coordinate automation, enabling twice-annual reboots of ~7k servers, and expanding BCC global footprint with new production clusters.
Requirements
- At least 4+ years experience as a Team Lead of a software development team.
- BS/MS/PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technology field.
- Solid foundation in software development: best practices, code quality, modular design, testing strategies, CI/CD pipelines, and maintainability.
- Ability to reason about system behavior, failure domains, and scaling characteristics to guide stability, reliability, and performance.
- Architectural fluency across compute, storage, networking, and orchestration technologies.
- Ability to foster a collaborative team environment and to effectively listen, communicate, challenge, and influence team members, peers, and senior managers.
- Experience building trusted relationships with stakeholders for cross-team collaboration and alignment.
