About the Team

The Product Policy team is responsible for the development, implementation, enforcement, and communication of the policies that govern the use of OpenAI’s services, including ChatGPT, GPTs, the GPT Store, and the OpenAI API. The team develops policy frameworks and strategic priorities to enable innovative and responsible use of AI.

Role overview

As a Mixed Methods UX researcher and early member of the Research and Measurement team on Product Policy, you will help create a data-driven policy development culture at OpenAI. You will leverage data on user behavior to define short- and long-term policy priorities, analyze trade-offs, and define north-star metrics that measure the success of policies and enforcement. This role is based in San Francisco, CA and uses a hybrid work model (3 days in office per week). Relocation assistance is offered to new employees.

Responsibilities

  • Embed as a member of the Product Policy team to apply data insights across the full lifecycle of policy development, implementation, and enforcement.
  • Conduct mixed-methods UX assessments of policy-critical user journeys and risk touchpoints, combining user research, case analysis, and product data to surface where policy shapes user experience.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Policy Research, Safety Systems, Intel & Investigations, Global Affairs, and other teams to coordinate research and data insights.
  • Define and operationalize product- and feature-level metrics; establish north-star metrics for policy and enforcement success.
  • Establish and promote a data-driven policy development culture across the organization.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience in a mixed-methods role navigating highly ambiguous environments (examples given: founding data scientist, researcher, or product analyst).
  • Experience defining, implementing, and operationalizing new feature- and product-level metrics from scratch, especially in ambiguous areas related to AI policy or social science.
  • Capacity for strategic insights beyond traditional statistical-significance paradigms.
  • Strong interest in user behavior and in identifying optimized approaches to hard problems.
  • Excellent communication skills and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with product managers, engineers, researchers, and executives.

You could be an especially great fit if you have:

  • A background in social science, philosophy, ethics, and/or economics.
  • Familiarity with major AI policy questions facing the company and the world.

Benefits

  • Base pay range: $310,000 – $393,000 (role may also include equity and performance-related bonus(es) for eligible employees).
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance with employer contributions to Health Savings Accounts.
  • Pre-tax accounts (Health FSA, Dependent Care FSA, commuter expenses).
  • 401(k) retirement plan with employer match.
  • Paid parental leave and paid medical/caregiver leave.
  • Paid time off: flexible PTO for exempt employees and up to 15 days annually for non-exempt employees; 13+ paid company holidays and periodic coordinated company office closures.
  • Mental health and wellness support; employer-paid basic life and disability coverage.
  • Annual learning and development stipend; daily meals in offices and meal delivery credits as eligible.
  • Relocation support for eligible employees.
  • Additional taxable fringe benefits (charitable donation matching, wellness stipends) and other benefits detailed during hiring.
