Details

NVIDIA Research seeks PhD research interns to apply modern AI methods across the Earth System Simulation and Analytics stack. The group focuses on research topics including generative data assimilation, hybrid climate simulation, full model emulation of climate model components, regional-to-global high-resolution AI autoregressive weather prediction, and dynamical downscaling. Interns will work on interdisciplinary problems at the intersection of AI and climate science, publish at top venues, and help transfer research into NVIDIA products using top-of-the-line NVIDIA GPUs at scale.

Responsibilities

  • Propose, research, prototype and test innovative research ideas in AI for climate and weather simulation.
  • Publish groundbreaking work at top conferences and journals.
  • Collaborate with research team members, fellow interns, internal product teams, and external researchers; receive mentorship.
  • Contribute to technology transfer as ideas graduate from research to product.
  • Make effective use of NVIDIA GPUs at scale for research experiments and model development.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in at least the 2nd year of a Ph.D. in geophysical sciences, computer science, applied math/statistics, or related fields.
  • Strong research portfolio including at least one first-author publication that makes substantial use of AI.
  • Proficiency or demonstrable ability to quickly absorb distributed deep learning training frameworks (e.g., PyTorch).
  • Strong software engineering skills, including experience with PyTorch, PyTorch-Lightning, shell scripting, software environment management, and high-performance parallel GPU computing.
  • Experience scaling algorithms for high computational loads is a plus.
  • Experience developing in changing software environments and driving research projects end-to-end (including messy/engineering parts) is a plus.
  • Expertise in climate domain science, nonlinear physics, and familiarity with associated synthetic and/or observational datasets and/or physical simulation systems is a plus.
  • Excellent communication skills.

Benefits

  • Internship hourly rate: 30 USD - 94 USD (standard pay based on position, location, year in school, degree, and experience).
  • Eligibility for NVIDIA intern benefits (see NVIDIA intern benefits page).
  • Opportunity to work with top-tier GPUs and collaborate with NVIDIA Research and product teams.
  • Applications accepted at least until October 13, 2025.
