NVIDIA Research is seeking PhD research interns to apply modern AI methods to re-imagine technology across the Earth System Simulation and Analytics stack. Work areas include generative data assimilation, hybrid climate simulation, full model emulation of climate model components, regional-to-global high-resolution AI autoregressive weather prediction, and dynamical downscaling. Candidates may be strong computer scientists with domain knowledge in physical sciences or strong domain scientists with strong technical skills. The group publishes at top venues in climate science and AI and collaborates with product teams to transfer research into NVIDIA products.
Responsibilities
- Propose, research, prototype and test innovative research ideas.
- Publish research at top conferences and journals.
- Collaborate with research team members, fellow interns, internal product teams, and external researchers, and receive mentorship.
- Contribute to technology transfer as ideas graduate from research to product.
- Use top-of-the-line NVIDIA GPUs at scale for cutting-edge research at the intersection of AI and climate science.
Requirements
- Currently enrolled in at least the 2nd year of a Ph.D. in geophysical sciences, computer science, applied math/statistics, or related fields.
- Strong research portfolio including at least one first-author publication that makes good use of AI.
- Proficiency or demonstrable ability to quickly absorb distributed deep learning training frameworks (e.g., PyTorch).
- Strong software engineering skills, including PyTorch, PyTorch-Lightning, shell scripting, software environment management, and high-performance parallel GPU computing.
- Experience in scaling algorithms for high computational loads is a plus.
- Experience developing in changing software environments and driving research projects end-to-end is a plus.
- Expertise in climate domain science, nonlinear physics, or familiarity with synthetic/observational datasets and physical simulation systems is a plus.
- Excellent communication skills.
Compensation
- Internship hourly rates: 30 USD - 94 USD (standard pay based on position, location, year in school, degree, and experience).
Benefits
- Eligible for NVIDIA intern benefits (link to benefits provided in original posting).
- Opportunity to work with NVIDIA Research experts, access to high-end GPUs, and potential real-world impact on NVIDIA products and climate prediction research.
Additional information
- Location provided in the posting: Santa Clara, CA, United States.
- Applications accepted at least until October 13, 2025.
- NVIDIA is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity and inclusion.
