About the Team
The OpenAI API team builds the foundation that enables every developer to harness OpenAI’s models safely, reliably, and at scale. The team designs and operates systems for model serving, API access, billing, developer tooling, and enterprise integrations. The team is responsible for infrastructure and product layers that allow millions of developers to integrate GPT models, fine-tune behavior, manage data, and deliver transformative experiences.
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Product Manager to define and scale the construction of data processing, data privacy, billing, and access controls products. Responsibilities include setting strategy and executing projects such as expanding regional data processing footprint, enabling inference caching controls in the API, and building APIs to help organizations manage spend limits. The role partners deeply with engineering, security, legal, compliance, finance, and leadership to deliver enterprise-grade, high-trust systems.
This role is based in San Francisco, CA and uses a hybrid work model (3 days in office per week). Relocation assistance is offered to new employees.
Responsibilities
- Develop an enterprise data control plane to securely access and manage enterprise data for LLM use.
- Drive product strategy for safety controls, privacy features, access management, and API usage/cost visibility.
- Build and improve data governance capabilities: retention, encryption, audit logs, permissions, and lifecycle management.
- Lead development of access control models, identity flows (SSO/SAML, SCIM), and admin tooling.
- Oversee usage metering, cost dashboards, alerts, budgeting tools, and predictable API cost experiences.
- Partner cross-functionally with security, legal, compliance, finance, and engineering to deliver enterprise-grade capabilities.
Requirements / Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in security, privacy, data infrastructure, or usage-based platform products.
- Strong understanding of data governance, access controls, and enterprise identity.
- Experience with usage metering, cost-management tooling, or billing-adjacent systems.
- Ability to work across security, legal, engineering, compliance, and finance domains.
- Strong systems thinking and analytical skills; comfortable operating in high-risk, high-trust areas.
- Proven experience leading large, complex, highly technical cross-functional teams. Mentoring/leading others is a plus.
- Excellent communication and ability to drive alignment across complex technical and regulatory environments.
