About the Team

Safety Systems manages the complete lifecycle of safety efforts for OpenAI's frontier models, ensuring our models are deployed responsibly and have a positive impact on society. Work spans diverse research and engineering initiatives — from system-level safeguards and model training to evaluation and red-teaming — all aimed at mitigating misuse, misalignment, and maintaining a high bar for safety. The team leads OpenAI's commitment to developing and deploying safe Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), fostering a culture of trust, responsibility, and transparency.

About the Role

We are hiring a Product Manager to focus on biosecurity risk. You will drive initiatives to ensure OpenAI’s frontier model deployments are safe, impactful, and aligned with user needs and technical innovation. Responsibilities include clarifying strategic priorities, developing safety-focused product roadmaps, collaborating closely with AI researchers, software engineers, policy experts, and cross-functional partners, and creating plans to uplift the ecosystem to outpace adversaries. This role suits a proactive, technically skilled product manager adept at adversarial thinking and excited to tackle challenging, ambiguous problems through structured analysis and collaborative decision-making.

This position is based in San Francisco, CA, with relocation assistance available.

Responsibilities

  • Partner closely with research, engineering, data science, policy teams, and other stakeholders to embed safety throughout the development and deployment of frontier AI models.
  • Develop comprehensive frameworks for understanding and mitigating deployment safety risks, drawing on data analysis, expert consultation, and adversarial assessments.
  • Define strategic priorities and product roadmaps focused on improving deployment safety, enhancing reliability, and managing emerging AI capabilities.
  • Create scalable methodologies, tools, and processes for evaluating, refining, and continuously improving safety systems.
  • Establish repeatable processes to integrate cutting-edge AI safety research into OpenAI’s models and product offerings.
  • Develop and continuously refine clear, actionable metrics that effectively capture safety performance and user experience at scale.

Requirements

  • 6+ years of product management or related industry experience, with specific expertise in AI safety, trust & safety, integrity, or related domains.
  • Background in biology (explicitly listed as a desirable qualification).
  • Strong adversarial thinking and experience with evaluations such as red-teaming or adversarial assessments.
  • Experience using data analysis and expert consultation to inform product decisions and risk frameworks.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive consensus and action in ambiguous spaces and excel at cross-functional collaboration.
  • Effective communicator able to explain complex technical concepts clearly and persuasively.
  • Interest in interdisciplinary areas such as human-computer interaction, psychology, philosophy, or related fields is a plus.

Benefits

  • Base pay range: $293,000 – $325,000 (total compensation may include equity and performance-related bonus(es)).
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance with employer contributions to Health Savings Accounts.
  • Pre-tax accounts: Health FSA, Dependent Care FSA, and commuter accounts.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with employer match.
  • Paid parental leave and paid medical/caregiver leave.
  • Paid time off: flexible PTO for exempt employees and up to 15 days annually for non-exempt employees.
  • 13+ paid company holidays and multiple coordinated office closures.
  • Mental health and wellness support; employer-paid basic life and disability coverage.
  • Annual learning and development stipend.
  • Daily meals in offices and meal delivery credits as eligible.
  • Relocation support for eligible employees.
  • Additional taxable fringe benefits (charitable donation matching, wellness stipends, etc.).
