About the Team

OpenAI’s Applied AI org is the product development arm of the company, bringing the power of advanced AI models to the world via APIs and user-interface products (ChatGPT, Codex, etc). The Product Ops team provides operational expertise and leverage for product teams bringing solutions to market, and streamlines and automates org operations and information channels (across Applied and with adjacent functions) to set strong foundations for collaboration at scale.

About the role

This Product Operations Manager role is a senior individual contributor role based in San Francisco, CA. The team uses a hybrid work model (3 days in office per week). The company offers relocation assistance to new employees.

The role focuses on operating alpha/beta/GA programs, owning launch calendars and readiness cadence for product groups, building systems for feedback intake and triage, coordinating high-impact moments (demos, rollout waves, partner showcases), and building internal tools/automations (code/no-code/AI) that scale operations. The role contributes to codifying Product Operations best practices and mentoring peers.

Responsibilities

  • Stand up and operate alpha/beta/GA programs with clear entry/exit criteria: recruit design partners, run internal dogfooding, and convert qualitative/quantitative insights into prioritized product work.
  • Own the launch calendar and readiness cadence for a product group; run cross-functional checkpoints across Product, Engineering, Research, Safety, Security, Legal, Support, and GTM.
  • Build systems to capture, triage, and synthesize user feedback into actionable recommendations.
  • Lead coordination for high-impact moments (e.g., Dev Day demos, rollout waves, partner showcases), managing timelines, resources, and communications.
  • Build internal tools and automations (code / no-code / AI) to scale operations: feedback intake, issue taxonomy, release notes, etc.
  • Contribute to building and scaling the Product Operations function—codifying best practices, raising quality, and mentoring peers.

Requirements / Helpful experience & skills

  • Deep experience in Product Operations at scaling tech companies, working closely with Product, Engineering, and cross-functional partners on central systems and go-to-market launch activities.
  • Experience standing up and operating alpha/beta programs and launch readiness processes.
  • Comfortable recruiting design partners, running dogfooding and beta tests, and synthesizing qualitative and quantitative insights.
  • Experience building internal systems and automations (code and no-code) to support operational workflows.
  • Comfortable coordinating across Product, Eng, Research, Safety, Security, Legal, Support, and GTM stakeholders.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and influence without authority.
  • Entrepreneurial, high-agency approach: ship v1s quickly and iterate.
  • Engagement with the evolving AI and agentic-systems landscape; appreciation for technical nuances of LLM-powered agents (tool use, evals, telemetry, safety constraints).

Specific technologies / skills that will be helpful:

  • Experience with OpenAI tools and APIs (ChatGPT, Codex, text generation, structured outputs, function calling, etc.)
  • Programming languages: Python, JavaScript (for automation scripts)
  • No-Code / Low-Code platforms: Airtable, Retool, Zapier (or equivalents)
  • Data analysis & visualization tools and languages: SQL, Google Sheets automations, Databricks
  • Git & GitHub
  • Terminal proficiency and comfort with CLIs
