About the team

The UX Research team is a small team with outsized impact across OpenAI. The team sits at the intersection of users, product, and safety—helping ensure that powerful AI systems are built responsibly and grounded in real human needs. The role partners closely with product, design, engineering, and leadership to bring clarity to complex questions in fast-moving spaces.

Role summary

This role designs and executes quantitative research across the product lifecycle, from foundational understanding to concept validation, prototyping, and usability evaluation. You will translate complex data into clear, actionable recommendations and influence product direction through cross-functional collaboration and audience-appropriate storytelling.

Responsibilities

  • Design and execute quantitative research across the product lifecycle, including surveys, experiments, and behavioral data analysis.
  • Partner with product managers, designers, engineers, and data scientists to identify opportunities where quantitative insights can shape product decisions.
  • Lead rigorous, customized studies answering strategic and tactical questions.
  • Apply strong survey methodology and statistical rigor to ensure findings are valid, reliable, and decision-ready.
  • Translate complex data into clear, actionable recommendations to drive alignment and decision-making across teams.
  • Influence product direction through close cross-functional collaboration and clear storytelling.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in user experience research, market research, data science, or a related field with a strong focus on quantitative methods.
  • Expertise in quantitative research, including statistical analysis, experimental design, survey methodology, and behavioral data analysis.
  • Strong data analysis skills using tools such as SQL and Python.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills and experience working with senior stakeholders.
  • Proven experience leading quantitative research projects that influenced product and design decisions.
  • A drive for excellence and the ability to consistently raise the bar.

Location & workplace

  • This role is based in San Francisco, CA. The position operates on a hybrid model with 3 days in the office each week.
