Details

Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. The Multimodal team builds and studies multimodal models (image, video, audio + text) to better understand and mitigate risks introduced by powerful multimodal AIs. The team works across training, inference, system design and data collection, developing architectures, infrastructure, and tooling to run large-scale experiments and safely collect multimodal data.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct foundational research to develop new architectures for modeling multimodal data and study interactions with text-only models at scale.
  • Build infrastructure for large-scale multimodal research, including:
    • Complex multimodal reinforcement learning environments.
    • High-performance RPC servers for processing image inputs.
    • Sandboxing infrastructure for securely collecting data.
  • Develop tooling and pipelines for large-scale multimodal data ingestion, processing, cleaning, and ETL to support experiments at scale.
  • Collaborate closely with researchers and engineers (pair programming is encouraged) across training, inference, platform, and interpretability teams.
  • Work on projects spanning GPUs, large-scale ML systems, and system-level components to enable large training and inference runs.

Requirements

  • At least a Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience.
  • Significant software engineering experience.
  • Results-oriented with flexibility and impact bias; comfortable working outside strict job boundaries when needed.
  • Comfortable with close collaboration (pair programming) and strong communication skills.
  • Interest in machine learning research and awareness of societal impacts of AI.

Strongly Preferred / Helpful Experience

  • Experience with high-performance, large-scale ML systems.
  • Familiarity with GPUs and GPU-based training/inference workflows.
  • Experience with Kubernetes and related infrastructure tooling.
  • Hands-on experience with PyTorch.
  • Knowledge of language modeling and transformers.
  • Experience with reinforcement learning.
  • Large-scale ETL and data ingestion pipelines.
  • OS internals knowledge for performance-sensitive systems.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Annual base salary: £250,000 - £270,000 GBP.
  • Total compensation package may include equity, benefits, and potential incentive compensation.
  • Anthropic offers competitive benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and office space for collaboration.

Logistics

  • Location: London, UK. Location-based hybrid policy: staff are expected to be in an office at least 25% of the time (some roles may require more).
  • Education requirement: at least a Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience.
  • Visa sponsorship: Anthropic does sponsor visas and retains an immigration lawyer, though sponsorship is not guaranteed for every role.
  • Anthropic encourages applicants even if they do not meet every listed qualification and values diverse perspectives.

How to Apply

  • Apply via the Greenhouse application form: provide contact details, resume/CV or LinkedIn profile, and answers to the application questions (team preferences, availability, visa needs, etc.).
