Research Engineer / Research Scientist, Multimodal

Anthropic is building reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. The Multimodal team builds and studies multimodal models (images, video, audio, and text) to better understand and mitigate risks introduced by powerful multimodal AIs. The team works across training, inference, system design and data collection, and focuses on large-scale experiments and infrastructure to support multimodal research.

Responsibilities

• Conduct foundational research and engineering on architectures for modeling multimodal data and how they interact with text-only models at scale.
• Build infrastructure across the stack, including complex multimodal reinforcement learning environments, high-performance RPC servers for processing image inputs, and sandboxing infrastructure for securely collecting data.
• Develop tooling to collect, process, and clean very large sources of multimodal data (large-scale ETL and data ingestion pipelines).
• Run large-scale simple experiments rather than smaller complex ones—optimize systems for scale and performance.
• Collaborate closely with researchers and engineers (pair programming is common) and contribute across research and engineering tasks as needed.

Requirements

• At least a Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience.
• Significant software engineering experience and a results-oriented mindset.
• Interest in and willingness to learn more about machine learning research and the societal impacts of AI.
• Comfort working across training, inference, system design, and data collection components of ML systems.

Strong candidates may also have experience with:

• High-performance, large-scale ML systems
• GPUs and related engineering for ML workloads
• Kubernetes
• PyTorch
• OS internals
• Language modeling with transformers
• Reinforcement learning
• Large-scale ETL and data ingestion
• Building high-performance RPC servers and sandboxing infrastructure for secure data collection

Logistics

• Location: London, UK (location-based hybrid policy: staff are expected to be in an office at least 25% of the time).
• Education: Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience.
