Research Engineer, Search

Details

Anthropic is building reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. This role focuses on redesigning how Claude interacts with external data sources by creating new information architectures and training language models to use them effectively. You'll work with researchers and engineers to build scalable retrieval and agentic search capabilities, perform fine-tuning and reinforcement learning, and construct robust evaluation sets for knowledge base interactions.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement new information architecture strategies from scratch.
• Perform fine-tuning and reinforcement learning to teach language models how to interact with new information architectures.
• Build “hard” knowledge base evaluation sets to identify failure modes in model interactions with external data.
• Design and evaluate advanced agentic search capabilities.
• Prototype and collaborate with product teams to deliver solutions.

Requirements

• Very experienced Python programmer, able to produce reliable, high-quality code.
• Strong machine learning research experience.
• Experience developing software that utilizes Large Language Models (LLMs) such as Claude.
• Experience or willingness to perform model fine-tuning and reinforcement learning workflows.
• Ability to design or work with scalable distributed information retrieval systems (search engines, knowledge graphs, RAG, indexing, ranking, query understanding, distributed data processing).
• Results-oriented, flexible, and collaborative; comfortable pair programming and cross-functional work.
• Clear written and verbal communication skills.
• Education: At least a Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience.

Strong candidates will also have experience with

• Collaborating with product teams to prototype and deliver innovative solutions.
• Building complex agentic systems that utilize LLMs.
• Developing scalable distributed information retrieval systems (search engines, knowledge graphs, RAG, indexing, ranking, query understanding, distributed data processing).

Logistics

• Locations: Remote-friendly (travel required) with offices in San Francisco, CA; Seattle, WA; New York City, NY.
• Location-based hybrid policy: staff are expected to be in an office at least 25% of the time.
• Visa sponsorship: Anthropic does sponsor visas when possible and retains immigration counsel to assist.

Compensation

• Annual salary range: $315,000 - $425,000 USD.
