Details
Preparedness is a critical Safety Research team at OpenAI focused on mitigating AI threats to global security that could scale to an extreme level of severity. This role leads Preparedness work defending the security of internal autonomous coding and research AI agents against insiders, Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs), or powerful AI agents. The position requires a strong hands-on technical executor who can both develop threat models and lead technical execution (including prototyping controls and writing/reviewing software) and coordinate across Security, Infrastructure, Research, Legal, and Preparedness.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain threat models for how advanced attackers could compromise coding assistants and automated security systems.
- Identify and prioritize security investments by considering implementation lead-times, costs, and benefits.
- Partner with Security, Infrastructure, Research, Legal, and Preparedness to align on implementation plans and tradeoffs.
- Lead technical execution when needed: prototype controls, write and review software, and coordinate engineers across teams.
- Work with penetration testers to close gaps in defenses.
Requirements
- Exceptional hands-on technical execution skills and experience implementing security controls.
- Experience working with advanced persistent threat actors or other capable cyberoffensive groups.
- Ability to creatively reason about non-standard security problems and design workable controls under tight constraints.
- Experience leading technical programs or teams and coordinating cross-functional stakeholders.
- Practical experience with threat modeling, mitigation design, and collaborating with penetration testing teams.
- Comfortable writing and reviewing software as part of security control implementation.

- Base salary range: $293,000 - $405,000 (offers equity and other total-compensation components).
