Ready to be pushed beyond what you think you’re capable of?

At Coinbase, our mission is to increase economic freedom in the world. It’s a massive, ambitious opportunity that demands the best of us, every day, as we build the emerging onchain platform — and with it, the future global financial system.

To achieve our mission, we’re seeking a very specific candidate. We want someone who is passionate about our mission and who believes in the power of crypto and blockchain technology to update the financial system. We want someone who is eager to leave their mark on the world, who relishes the pressure and privilege of working with high caliber colleagues, and who actively seeks feedback to keep leveling up. We want someone who will run towards, not away from, solving the company’s hardest problems.

Our work culture is intense and isn’t for everyone. While many roles at Coinbase are remote-first, we are not remote-only. In-person participation is required throughout the year. Team and company-wide offsites are held multiple times annually to foster collaboration, connection, and alignment. Attendance is expected and fully supported.

The Institutional, Derivatives Exchange team is seeking a Senior Engineering Manager to lead a talented and growing engineering team at the forefront of solving industry-leading challenges. This role supports and expands the crypto derivatives business in the US and internationally.

Responsibilities

  • Lead engineering teams responsible for mission-critical, sub-millisecond systems underpinning Derivatives Exchanges.
  • Collaborate with engineers, designers, product managers, and senior leadership to translate vision into a tangible roadmap; break down complex projects and lead iterative design and implementation.
  • Serve as a thoughtful technical voice, aiding in architectural decisions and fostering a culture of high quality and operational excellence.
  • Collaborate with Product and Engineering teams to ensure successful delivery and operation of complex, distributed systems at scale.
  • Coach direct reports to increase their impact and support career growth; manage and recruit exceptional engineers in partnership with talent teams.
  • Contribute to and take ownership of processes that drive engineering quality and meet engineering SLAs.
  • Be hands-on when needed: writing/reviewing code or technical documents, participating in on-call rotations, leading incidents, and triaging/troubleshooting bugs.

Requirements

  • Experience building and operating 24/7 financial trading systems (e.g., Matching Engines, Order Management Systems, Risk Engines, Market Data, Order Gateways) with an understanding of how these systems differ from traditional web architectures.
  • Domain experience with crypto, derivatives, or other financial products.
  • At least 10 years of experience in software engineering.
  • At least 5 years of engineering management experience, including 2 years managing managers.
  • Strong knowledge of high quality code and software engineering processes and ability to foster an environment that creates them.
  • Execution focused with an ability to navigate ambiguity; capable of both long-term thinking and short-term planning.
  • Experience architecting complex distributed systems at scale.
  • Willingness and ability to be hands-on when needed, including participation in on-call rotations and incident leadership.
  • Passion for building an open financial system.

Nice to Haves

  • Experience running exchanges at scale.
  • Deep Operating Systems expertise.
  • Experience with both cloud and on-prem systems.
