At Coinbase, our mission is to increase economic freedom in the world. The Analytics Engineering team is part of the Data Engineering organization and sits at the intersection of data engineering, data science, and business analytics. The team transforms raw data into actionable insights through pipelines, scalable data models, and tools that prioritize data quality, reliability, and usability. This role is a hands-on leadership position that combines technical ownership, people management, and direct business impact, with a focus on preparing analytics foundations for AI and LLM-driven workflows. While Coinbase is remote-first, in-person participation and attendance at team/company offsites throughout the year is required.
Responsibilities
- Build and lead the analytics engineering team: hire, mentor, grow talent, and manage managers as needed.
- Architect and lead core data modeling initiatives: define scalable, reliable, high-impact data models and domain-specific data marts for finance, CX, HR, compliance, and product teams.
- Ensure data quality and reliability: create and enforce testing, monitoring, and validation frameworks to keep data accurate and trusted.
- Deliver business impact: oversee dashboards, ad-hoc analytics, and self-service tools that empower product teams and stakeholders.
- Leverage AI and LLMs: investigate how LLMs and AI change analytics, and design data foundations and marts optimized for AI-driven analytics.
- Partner with stakeholders: collaborate across finance, CX, HR, compliance, data science, and product to maximize data value and inform decision-making.
- Prioritize outcomes over tools: select appropriate frameworks and technologies, develop abstractions and internal data apps, and improve scalable workflows.
Requirements
- Demonstrated experience building and leading data and analytics engineering teams, including hiring and growing managers and individual contributors.
- Strong expertise in data modeling, ETL/ELT, and modern data stack tools (examples called out: Airflow, dbt, Snowflake, Hex).
- Hands-on technical leadership: comfortable balancing strategic leadership with hands-on work and technical ownership of models and pipelines.
- Strong engineering best practices: version control (GitHub), CI/CD, modern development workflows, OOP principles, and building scalable frameworks.
- Advanced SQL skills for data transformation, querying, and optimization.
- Statistical foundation: solid understanding of statistics and probability to validate assumptions and interpret data.
- Experience partnering with finance, CX, support, and compliance teams to build analytics solutions that improve operations and ensure regulatory accuracy.
- AI-forward mindset: familiarity with LLMs and prompt engineering and interest in designing data marts and foundations for AI-driven analytics.
- Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and product sense: ability to get buy-in, break down silos, and prioritize work based on business impact.
- Autonomy and accountability: operate independently and own outcomes.
